I presented a SPEAKHIRE Seminar to Crotona International High School in the Bronx, NY. There were 22 English as a second language 9th and 10th graders. I was asked to present on my career journey and then cover the topic of “Email” 🧐 It was very fun to put the deck together and relive my journey!

And my Dad is Scottish 󰧺.
I have 2 brothers
One is 15 years older than me!
And one is 2 years younger.

Fun Facts About Me as a Child
1. I was on The Bozo Show.
2. I played on a traveling softball league.
3. I was a girl scout.
4. I was only on a plane once as a kid.
5. I owned my own jewelry business complete with business cards!

1. I played JV soccer and JV volleyball.
2. I took Spanish and was in all AP classes.
3. I always had a part-time jobs.

Me in College
1. I went to University of Illinois and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in
Economics.
2. I changed my major 3 times - I started as a History/Pre-Law major, changed
to Math and CS and then changed again to Economics.
3. I played Ice Hockey and performed in a Dance Troupe.
4. I took Italian as an elective. I thought it would be easy since I knew Spanish
but in the end I was just more confused. 󰤈
5. I tried to study abroad in Italy but didn’t get accepted into the program. 😞
6. I waited tables at a dozen restaurants around campus.
7. I learned code HTML, CGI and Perl and build web pages and forms.
8. I had 3 jobs. I worked for a local internet service provider and for 2
different divisions at the university building web pages.
9. I interviewed for a summer internship in Chicago, but didn’t get it. 😞

Me After College
1. I moved to California 2 weeks after I graduated college!
2. I moved in with my older brother and paid him rent for the first year.
3. It was the middle of the dotcom boom!
4. I started applying to jobs and working with an agency to help find me
contract positions.
5. I had desirable skills because I had learned HTML and could build web
pages.
6. I got 2 offers! A permanent salaried position with a startup in San
Francisco and contract position with Apple.
7. Believe it or not this was a hard decision. Apple was not what it is today,
but I chose….

The Apple Years
1. I spent 6 years at Apple.
2. I started as a contractor and within 6 months got hired into a
permanent, salaried position.
3. I had my own office with a door!
4. I made some of my closest friends that I am still friends with today.
5. I started as a Web Developer and then became the Web Manager and
eventually worked for the Apple.com team.
6. I was there during the Cube, the Mac Mini, the new iMac and the iPod.
7. I applied to grad school at University of California at Berkeley but did not
get in. 😞

The Motorola Years
1. I spent the next 6 years at Motorola.
2. I was given an opportunity to lead a team.
3. And I got to travel all over the world. 󰎩 󰧹 󰎲
4. My role expanded from Web to more general Marketing.
5. I owned and operated a Fitness franchise for moms with babies called
Baby Boot Camp for 2 years and then sold it.
This was in Beijing, China!
We hosted a technical event there
and I was part of the event and
marketing staff that ran the event.

Startups and Moving Around
1. I worked for 2 startups (Sencha and Realm),
Salesforce and 8x8.
2. Lots more business travel and events.
3. I won the ping pong tournament while I was at
Sencha.

The short answer is no.
Email is here to stay, but it is becoming less relevant
as other forms of communication become more
popular.

Email used to be used for everything and we
would be glued to our email as the main form
of communication.
As people became more comfortable with
Text Messaging, Email started to become a
secondary communication method.

DO: Use email when you don’t require an immediate response ✅
DON’T: Use email for sensitive topics 🚫
DO: Use email for documentation ✅
DO: Think about your subject line ✅
DO: Proofread your email more than once ✅
DO: Take the time to be a friendly human ✅
DON’T: Click on or open any weird attachments 🚫
DON’T: Click on any links from someone you don’t know 🚫
