Energy Data Access Management with Ocean Protocol

Ocean Protocol is a decentralized network for data and compute access management that aims to solve two key issues: 1) connecting problem owners with problem solvers and 2) unlocking the benefits of more data while maintaining privacy and control. The Ocean network allows private data to remain behind firewalls while running algorithms and modeling to gain insights. This enables businesses to gain value from their private data without compromising privacy or control. Ocean launched its mainnet in March 2019 and its open source code and thorough documentation allow any organization, like the EWF ecosystem, to use Ocean for energy data access management across offices or collaborators on either private or public networks.

Data mesh is a relatively recent term that describes a set of principles that good modern data systems uphold. A kind of “microservices” for the data-centric world. While the data mesh is not technology-specific as a pattern, the building of systems that adopt and implement data mesh principles have a relatively long history under different guises. In this talk, we share our recommendations and picks of what every developer should know about building a streaming data mesh with Kafka. We introduce the four principles of the data mesh: domain-driven decentralization, data as a product, self-service data platform, and federated governance. We then cover topics such as the differences between working with event streams versus centralized approaches and highlight the key characteristics that make streams a great fit for implementing a mesh, such as their ability to capture both real-time and historical data. We’ll examine how to onboard data from existing systems into a mesh, modelling the communication within the mesh, how to deal with changes to your domain’s “public” data, give examples of global standards for governance, and discuss the importance of taking a product-centric view on data sources and the data sets they share.

Abstract of the Presentation: Ocean Protocol is a non-profit foundation designing and implementing a decentralized data marketplace. Ocean Protocol aims to break down data silos through equitable, universal, and secure access. The problem: Large companies have a data advantage in the ongoing AI revolution. With huge amounts data feeding AI models, there is an incentive to keep this data in-house and gain a competitive advantage. Given that more data often yields better AI, there are solutions which smaller companies and innovators can unlock if they had access to more data. The solution: Ocean Protocol tackles this challenge with a decentralized marketplace for data and AI services. Data providers are incentivised to open their data, and data consumers will gain seamless access to a new world of data, be it big data from a large corporation, or an aggregate of small datasets. This talk will demo the features available to Data Engineers, how you can partake in the decentralized data and AI ecosystem, and the roadmap until Ocean Protocol’s Ethereum main-net release. About the Author: Marcus Jones is the lead Data Scientist at Ocean Protocol, a Blockchain decentralized marketplace for data and models supporting the AI ecosystem. Marcus has been hacking in Python development and and Open Source projects for over 10 years, starting at the national research agency in Vienna, moving into international project management and consulting, and landing now in Berlin at Ocean Protocol. In particular, new advances in data mining and knowledge discovery that allow for the extraction of hidden knowledge in an enormous amount of data impose new threats on the seamless integration of information. We consider the problem of building privacy preserving algorithms for one category of data mining techniques, association rule mining.Suppose Alice owns a kanonymous database and needs to determine whether her database, when inserted with a tuple owned by Bob, is still kanonymous. Also, suppose that access to the database is strictly controlled, because for example data are used for certain experiments that need to be maintained confidential. Clearly, allowing Alice to directly read the contents of the tuple breaks the privacy of Bob (e.g., a patient’s medical record); on the other hand, the confidentiality of the database managed by Alice is violated once Bob has access to the contents of the database. Thus, the problem is to check whether the database inserted with the tuple is still k-anonymous, without letting Alice and Bob know the contents of the tuple and the database, respectively. In this paper, we propose two protocols solving this problem on suppression-based and generalization-based kanonymous and confidential databases. The protocols rely on well-known cryptographic assumptions, and we provide theoretical analyses to proof their soundness and experimental results to illustrate their efficiency.We have presented two secure protocols for privately checking whether a kanonymous database retains its anonymity once a new tuple is being inserted to it. Since the proposed protocols ensure the updated database remains K-anonymous, the results returned from a user’s (or a medical researcher’s) query are also kanonymous. Thus, the patient or the data provider’s privacy cannot be violated from any query. As long as the database is updated properly using the proposed protocols, the user queries under our application domain are always privacy-preserving

Storing data in the cloud poses a number of privacy issues. A way to handle them is supporting data replication and distribution on the cloud via a local, centrally synchronized storage. In this paper we propose to use an in-memory RDBMS with row-level data encryption for granting and revoking access rights to distributed data. This type of solution is rarely adopted in conventional RDBMSs because it requires several complex steps. In this paper we focus on implementation and benchmarking of a test system, which shows that our simple yet effective solution overcomes most of the problems.

The Raspberry Pi 5 was announced on October 2023. This new version of the popular embedded device comes with a new iteration of Broadcom’s VideoCore GPU platform, and was released with a fully open source driver stack, developed by Igalia. The presentation will discuss some of the major changes required to support this new Video Core iteration, the challenges we faced in the process and the solutions we provided in order to deliver conformant OpenGL ES and Vulkan drivers.
