Aim of the final project
Assignment: to create
• a sense of urgency
• a call to action for companies in business
sector
to change behaviors associated with a warming
planet.

• 1,600 m thick of ice can be
melted by (260-180) ppm CO2, so
1.0 ppm CO2 can melt 20 m thick
of ice
• CO2 level by 2050 will be 600 ppm
CO2 level 2015 is around 400 ppm
then (600-400) x 20 = 4,000 m
thick of ice can be melted by
2050
What is the consequence of this ?
Now is “make it or break it”
moment for taking action on the
climate change.
5. Slide backgroud Massive Open Online Course, The World Bank
Urgent, but….
We know that we have to react now, together
and differently, but if we are neither
• Policy makers nor government entities, who
can set regulations, standards, action plans
and control the action resources.
Except to wait for their slow acting willingness,
is there anything we can do? Sure we shall take
action, regardless how limited in our resources,
capabilities and contribution are.

What can companies do?
From the latest The ISO Survey* of ISO - International
Organization for Standardization in Geneva, Switzerland
shows that the total issued ISO 14001 certificates were
more than 300,000 until end of 2013. It means that there
are more than 300,000 organizations (incl. government
unit, business entities,…etc.) had established an ISO 14001
Environmental Management System (EMS).
If the existed EMS well implemented should be one
appropriate vehicle to drive the GHG-related improvement
in the business level, rather than creating a new whole
structure to run this challenge.

EMS of the companies
Plan stage
The requirements which are most direct link to
climate changes based on ISO 14001 are:
Environmental policy: …commit continual
improve the climate change mitigation and
adaptation, and protection of biodiversity and
ecosystems, or other relevant environmental
issues, i.e. https://www.apple.com/environment/
8. Slide backgroud Massive Open Online Course, The World Bank
EMS of the companies
Plan stage Continue
Environmental aspect: …identify the changes
to the environment, whether adverse or
beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from a
company's activities or products or services
that can interact with the environment
should include GHG emission under considering a life cycle
perspective, include: production stage distribution/sales stage
using stage disposal stage

10. Slide backgroud Massive Open Online Course, The World Bank
EMS of the companies
Plan stage Continue
Legal requirements and voluntary
obligations: …identify the compliance with
those requirements. Dominantly are the
buyers requirements, such as: Apple Expands
Renewable Energy Goal - Digits - WSJ
Apple generates renewable energy – from solar, wind, biogas, fuel cells,
geothermal and small hydropower plants — equivalent to 87% of the
energy used by its facilities worldwide. The company’s goal is to get to
100%.
Now it’s setting a far more ambitious goal to do the same for its
manufacturing supply chain.
11. Slide backgroud Massive Open Online Course, The World Bank
EMS of the companies
Plan stage Continue
Environmental objectives: shall be developed
to take into account the company’s significant
environmental aspects, applicable legal
requirements and voluntary obligations.
Apple’s goal is to generate renewable energy to get to 100% of the energy
used by its facilities worldwide, and to do the same for its manufacturing
supply chain.
Timeframe are missing.
When apple shall achieve its goal, and when the supply chain shall achieve
their goal?

Environmental objectives
If the manufacturing supply chain want to keep or increase the
brand/buyers order, they have try to fulfill the buyers expectations, other
example

EMS of the companies
Do stage
Awareness: The company shall ensure that
their employees be aware of
the environmental policy;
the significant environmental aspects and related impacts
associated with their work, including applicable legal
requirements and voluntary obligations;
their contribution to the effectiveness of the EMS, including
the benefits of improved environmental performance
Through training/communication
14. Slide backgroud Massive Open Online Course, The World Bank
EMS of the companies
Do stage Continue
Operational planning and control: …shall
specify the way it will plan, implement and
control the processes needed to meet
environmental management system
requirements.
Value chain planning and control: …shall
ensure that upstream and downstream
processes related to significant environmental
aspects are controlled or influenced.

EMS of the companies
Check stage
Monitoring, measurement, analysis and
evaluation: … specify the way it will
implement and maintain process(es) for
evaluating compliance with applicable legal
requirements and voluntary obligations.

Monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation, example
Yes, they monitoring the performance since 2007, before the brand asked.
17. Slide backgroud Massive Open Online Course, The World Bank
EMS of the companies
Check and action stage
Management review: Top management shall
review the organization's environmental
management system, includes:
the environmental performance, including …
opportunities for continual improvement

Reduce the Green House Gas Emission by
Environmental Conscious Product Design
Take apple products as an example: carbon footprint in %
Facilities, apple company, sales points: 1.2%
Product using stage: 20.4%
Transportation stage: 4.7%
Recycling stage: 1.5%
Manufacturing stage: 72.3%

Manufacturers can identify their significant
environmental aspect during their production
processes, and set their improvement objects
and targets, but
Product design, specification, components and
spar parts suppliers are defined and
nominated by the brand apple.
The manufactures can reduce CO2 emission by
energy management slightly.

apple, as brand or buyer can reduce CO2
emission by Environmental Conscious Product
Design in different product life stage much
more, i.e.
Use energy saving components/parts to
reduce the emission in production using

Simplify the packaging specification to
reduce CO2 footprint
