Anke de Looper & Marten Stavenga (John Benjamins Publishing Company)
A new transformative model is needed because conventional Read & Publish agreements do not best serve the needs of libraries and publishers in transforming budgets and revenues, respectively, from subscriptions to Open Access. Nina Schönfelder will present the “smooth transition model”, an advanced model, which is responsive to the progress in the transition. Anke de Looper & Marten Stavenga will present its implementation by a commercial publisher, highly specialized in linguistics. Their transformative agreement offers a gradual shift from subscription-based to publication-based charges for both publisher and libraries. The offer as well as the uptake by libraries will be discussed.

Who are we
• Independent family-owned
publishing company
• Specialised in Linguistics
• 88 journals
• 100-120 book titles per year
• www.jbe-platform.com
4. 4
|
Why this model
• Previously only occasionally APCs from individual authors
• Field of Linguistics scarce resources for OA funding for authors
• Our portfolio: sizeable list of relatively small, niche journals
• Small company: limited resources for negotiating “big deals”

|
Discovery of the Smooth Transition Model*
• Fits with subscription renewal process
• A good way to work with institutions
• No cap on published OA articles per year
• Built-in offset for participating institutions
• Transparent: single formula for all agreements
• Based on known publication data and subscription data
* Schönfelder, N. (2020). Proposal for a new model of transformative agreements: A smooth transition from subscriptions to APCs.

How we adapted the model
• Three-year rolling average of published articles to limit fluctuation
• Still offer institutions the option to pick and choose individual
journals for ‘read access’
7. 7
|
Preparation
• Submission process: where in the process are we able to check
which articles fall under a deal
• Information needed: - submit / accept dates
- corresponding authors
- affiliations (ROR)
• Filter: how do we check
• OA Switchboard: reporting and communication on OA articles
8. 8
|
Workflow
• For authors
• Basic workflow unchanged
• JB checks based on filter
• OA and license information in author proof
• For librarians
• No requirement to approve OA article unless library wished to do so
• Reporting through OA Switchboard or through separate report

|
Description of the model how we use it
Example:
• Institution has 20 subscriptions at subscription fees of € 5000
• Institution published across all JB journals on average 5 articles per year
(average of previous three years)
• JB Open Access factor: 3% of all JB journal articles are Open Access
• APC is € 1800
Read fee: € 5000 * (1 – 0.03 ) = € 4850
Publish fee: € 1800 * 5 * 0.03 = € 270
Read & Publish fee: € 5120

To round up
• This R&P model is an example of how this could work for a smaller
publisher in the field of HSS
• For authors, institutions and the publisher the model is easy as it uses
current familiar workflows and processes
• Simple, standard model available to all institutions and their authors
• Through this model we aim to contribute to a sustainable future of
Open Access for the authors and institutions we serve
