• A process and outcome that:
is genuinely participatory & secures
sustainable human development based on
inclusive and equitable pro-poor growth
enables accelerated achievement of the
MDGs and leads to Post 2015 process to
design future development goals built on
SD/Agenda 21 & Millennium Declaration
The transition towards a just society (incl. green economy) provides opportunities
to promote long-term sustainable pro-poor growth, create decent jobs and hence
eradicate poverty (incl. achieving the MDGs and beyond). Obviously, the voice &
demands of the poor have to be taken into account.

3. “Human beings are at the centre of concerns for sustainable
development. The right to development must be fulfilled so as to equitably
meet developmental and environmental needs of present and future
generations.”

5. The Future We Want - SDGs, MDGs
and Post 2015 Framework
• A new concept: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
• Complementary to the MDGs and based on the Agenda 21 and
Millennium Declaration
• Revise and improve on the strengths and deficiencies of the
MDGs
• Aligned with 3 pillars of SD: economic development, social
equity, and environmental protection
• Set of goals with an in-depth focus on sustainability,
accountability, human rights and equity
• Universal and not focused primarily only on developing
countries
• Need for an inclusive and joint effort in revising the MDGs and
the introduction of a new set of goals

7. Integrated Framework
Balancing socio-economic necessities with environmental concerns is the focus of debate over renewing
the MDGs after 2015, and creating SDGs at the UNCSD (Rio+20) .
Between the social foundation and the planetary ceiling lies an area - shaped like a doughnut - which is
the safe and just space for humanity to thrive in. The 21st century's unprecedented journey is to move
into that space from both sides: to eradicate poverty and inequity for all, within the means of the planet's
limited resources.

10. Role of CSOs & MAJOR GROUPS in Rio+20 &
Post 2015 Processes
• Commitment by SG/UNMC/UNDP/UNDG to ‘convene,
catalyze and support:

regional & global levels to:
generate useful knowledge and recommendations for
negotiating texts – amplify voices & reflect aspirations of
people
shape & advocate for the countries’/region’s agenda –
building political will
serve as technical support to delegations
monitor and influence discussions and resulting outcomes
organize events that showcase or share the
countries’/region’s interests, concerns, knowledge and
experiences
