1. Journal Data Requirements
UWS Library Webinar Oct 2014
Presented by Susan Robbins – Research Services Coordinator (Library)
Katrina Chaudhary – Science & Health Librarian
Gerry Devine – Data Manager HIE
2. Data Policy
o PLOS journals require authors to make all data underlying the
findings described in their manuscript fully available without
restriction, with rare exception.
o Authors are required to include a data availability statement
in all research articles published by PLOS journals
o Refusal to share data and related metadata and methods in
accordance with this policy will be grounds for rejection.

3. PLOS Acceptable data-sharing methods
• All data and meta data underlying reported findings
should be deposited in an appropriate public repository
• Repositories may be either subject-specific and accept
specific types of structured data, or generalist
repositories that accept multiple data types, such as
Dryad or Figshare

14. The Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment:
• Investigates the impacts of Environmental change on terrestrial
ecosystems and ecosystem function.
• Specializing in Plant Biology, Forestry Science, Ecology and Soil
Science
15. Data sources:
• Large scale sensor networks continuously generating data
• Researcher-produced analysis data
16. HIEv:
Application that helps HIE manage its research data end-to-end from
initial collection at field-based automatic data collection points through
to dataset packaging, cataloging in UWS' research data
catalogue/RedBox and advertising on the Research Data Australia
website.
17. Handle IDs:
• For publishing routine data (that may be of use publicly)

20. DOIs:
• The need to publish a dataset associated with a journal publication. This
needed a DOI as opposed to a handle
• Our HIEv -> Library system does not currently mint DOIs.
• Necessary to use a domain specific data repository or more communal
data/digital repository, e.g. Figshare, Dryad etc
21. FigShare:
• HIEv used to package data files together into a coherent dataset for publication
• Files uploaded to Scientist’s FigShare account.
• Some additional metadata given on the Figshare upload page
• Datasets can be temporarily held in a ‘private’ state (for journal submission
stage etc)
• Once published Dataset is minted with a DOI and made fully public (under the
CC-BY license)
• The figshare page itself acts as the landing page/destination of the DOI
