  4. If students will not be referring to the textbook in a face-to-face classroom they will not have to have it in a medium they can bring with them to class. Think about how you may use graphs, pictures or text from the book in class. Open source digital media is very flexible but requires us to prepare a little differently. You may want to include more elements from the text into your lecture presentations instead of asking the students to “open to page 376.” Or, you might drop some or all of the text into a learning management system. Unless you are very skilled, these actions need to be taken before, not during class. Murphy’s Law is especially active with electronic media! Some instructors use textbooks primarily to provide remediation for students with weak backgrounds or to take the subject matter further than you have time for in class. Because they are so much less expensive, open textbooks are ideal for these uses.
