Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) ESIP 2019 Summer Meeting - Day 2 Plenary – Tacoma, WA, July 17, 2019 In thinking about my remarks this morning, it occurred to me that there is very little that I could say to an outstanding community such as yours that you haven’t already heard. I do know, however, that one of the hallmarks of your community is your wonderful ethic of sharing, of giving, and your deep understanding that the more you GIVE in this community, the more you RECEIVE, and all toward better science for everyone, and better actions to literally save our planet. Toward this end, I want to share some remarks under a fun Star Wars theme, which I hope you’ll enjoy. These thoughts are about getting people to actually USE the resources that we’ve worked so very hard to build, and thus is in keeping with your conference theme: “Data to Action: Increasing the Use and Value of Earth Science Data and Information.” Slide design based on the Powerpoint slide template of Joshua D. Clarke, foxgguy2001.deviantart.com, Annville, KY

NACIS 2016 Presentation James E. Meacham, Department of Geography, University of Oregon Alethea Y. Steingisser, Department of Geography, University of Oregon Hall Sawyer, Western Ecosystems Technology, Inc. Laramie, Wyoming Emilene Ostlind, Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, University of Wyoming William Rudd, Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Cheyenne, Wyoming Matthew J Kauffman, U.S. Geological Survey, Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Department of Zoology and Physiology, University of Wyoming This presentation focuses on the role of cartography in wildlife migration study in Wyoming and the Greater Yellowstone Area. Representing complex scientific data in clear and meaningful ways presents major design challenges. Specifically, working with the visual interrelationship of GPS-derived migration data and the landscape setting is covered. The same points, lines, and polygons derived from the GPS data can tell different ecological stories such as migration timing, seasonality, speed, or fidelity to a particular route. This cartographic challenge is compounded by the multitude of interrelationships between the ecological behavior and the landscape. Elevation, land cover, land ownership, and special management areas can all be equally important contributors to the migration story and therefore a necessary component of the map. Maps and graphics from the in-production Atlas of Wildlife Migration: Wyoming's Ungulates will be used to illustrate these cartographic challenges and solutions.

Key goals for effective and efficient customer relationship management have not changed - acquire new customers, build loyalty, and reduce costs. With the advent of cell phones, consumers are forcing businesses to expand their thinking to now include the mobile channel to meet and further those fundamental objectives. The mobile channel is evolving from one-time, one-off projects to Mobile CRM, where marketers are optimizing one-to-one customer communications and developing more meaningful relationships through this emerging medium.

Unlocking the power of mobile messaging presents companies with a worthwhile challenge. The mobile channels – SMS, IVR, Push, Twitter, Facebook, Passbook – return significantly more value when integrated across Marketing, Sales, Communications, Support and Operations. Seamlessly developing this requisite integration, however, requires the tactical coordination of ESPs, CRMs, traditional agencies, specialist agencies and specialist technology companies. Though developing a roadmap can feel overwhelming, to those companies that do succeed go the spoils: true cross-channel interactivity, the holy grail of mobile marketing and an imposing competitive advantage in a now-mobile world. The secret to success? Viewing mobile not as a communication strategy, but as a data strategy. Join us in this webinar as Matt Silk, CMO of Waterfall Mobile, reveals the optimal tactics for developing mobile to build relationships. Attendees will walk away with a clear understanding of what cross-channel mobile messaging actually means, as well as the required steps to get there.

Enormous opportunity exists for government agencies to take advantage of mobile. But tackling this endeavor without a roadmap can be overwhelming. That’s why we put together our Government Mobile Marketing Quick6 LookBook. It answers three questions: - Why government and mobile? - What examples are out there that government marketers can learn from? - What are best practices for government mobile marketing initiatives?

The mission of the Transportation Research Board is to provide leadership in transportation innovation and progress through research and information exchange, con- ducted within a setting that is objective, interdisciplinary, and multimodal. The Board’s varied activities annually engage about 7,000 engineers, scientists, and other trans portation researchers and practitioners from the public and private sectors and academia, all of whom con- tribute their expertise in the public inter- est. The program is supported by state transportation departments, federal agencies including the component administrations of the U.S. Department of Transportation, and other organiza- tions and individuals interested in the development of transportation. The National Research Council was orga- nized by the National Academy of Sciences in 1916 to associate the broad community of science and technology with the Academy’s purposes of fur- thering knowledge and advising the federal government. Functioning in accordance with general policies deter- mined by the Academy, the Council has become the principal operating agency of both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in providing services to the government, the public, and the scien- tific and engineering communities. www.TRB.org TRANSPORTATION RESEARCH BOARD 2013 EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE* Chair: Deborah H. Two way data sharing between government agencies and community groups is essential to ensure effective delivery of the Water Framework Directive and many other statutory and environmental management objectives. Achieving this will require some joined-up thinking and investment in strategic infrastructure, particularly for the community groups who aren't currently covered by the INSPIRE directive. The Rivers Trust as the umbrella body for the rivers trusts movement are key players working towards this aim.

A presentation to the 2015 Works Conference run by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia held in Parramatta, NSW, Australia on 19-20 May 2015. A clear zone is the width of roadside that is made available for an errant vehicle to take corrective action in an emergency. However, many roadsides have important biodiversity and thus the safety requirements (clear zones) must be resolved with environments. Research initiated by the NSW Roadside Environment Committee provides guidance and a tool for land managers to balance safety and the environment.

The Last Leaf is a short story by the American writer O. Henry (1862-1910) commonly known in the history of American literature as "the author of surprise ending". It tells the story of an old artist who saves the life of a young neighbouring artist, who is seriously ill and dying, by giving her the will to live. O. Henry knew people very well, especially the ordinary people of New York. In his stories you can feel satirical criticism of the American way of life. Most of his short stories are full of warm sympathy for ordinary American people.
