On 22nd August, Sierra Leone Flying Labs organized an open
house event under the theme '' Understanding the Drone and
Robotics Ecosystem in Sierra Leone''. The goal of the event
was to engage all drone actors in Sierra Leone to better
understand the current climate of drones and robotics in the
country. A total of 12 institutions were invited however, 7 were
present at the event and we had 13 participants in total. The
key highlights were:
Drone regulation
Challenges faced in communities
Access to drone software and hardware- Replacing parts
due to hardware failure is especially difficult.
The main outcome of the event was better understanding of
how much drones and robotics have impacted the lives of
people in Sierra Leone so far and the challenges faced by
drone users and how best they try to overcome these
challenges.
There is so much to be done in terms of drone and robotics in
Sierra Leone. The lack of regulations is a bottle neck and so
far it makes it difficult to undertake certain projects.

Celebrating Flying Labs Day
On 25 September, Sierra Leone Flying
Labs celebrated the inaugural Flying
Labs Day by opening our doors to 10
secondary schools in Freetown.
The purpose of celebrating Flying Labs
Day was to raise the profile and visibility
of Flying Labs in Sierra Leone.
Attendees learned about Sierra Leone
Flying Labs and how emerging
technologies such as robotics can be
used to solve our local challenges and
spur development through
presentations and demonstrations.
These included:
A presentation about Flying Labs
3D printing presentation and
demonstration
Drone demonstration and hands-on
flying
Mapping demonstration and
processing using pix4d
A presentation on the drone corridor
The event exposed students to
technology they had never seen as well
as the value of robotics and endless
applications of the technology. Students
left inspired, and the schools expressed
interest in having the Sierra Leone
Flying Labs engage their students
further.
Sierra Leone Flying Labs is engaging the Sierra Leone
Urban Research Center (SLURC) to provide drone mapping
of informal settlements to aid their improving informal
settlements project in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone Flying Labs will be participating in the Sierra
Leone Grammar Schools participate in their forthcoming
'Science Week' from 18-22 November 2019. Giving a
keynote address on the role of robotics in education and a
drone demonstration.
