1. Introduction
 Energy
Energy is capacity to do work . Energy can be changed from one form to
another but it neither be created nor be destroyed.
 Energy Resources
An energy resource is something that can produce heat, power life, move
objects, or produce electricity. Energy is found on our planet in a variety of
forms, some of which are immediately useful to do work, while others require a
process of transformation.
The sun is the primary energy source in our lives. Besides, water, fossil fuels
such as coal, petroleum products, water, nuclear power plants are sources of
energy.
4 1/18/2021 “The Earth is what we all have in common.” —Wendell Berry
2. Consumption
 In 2014, the share of world energy consumption for electricity generation by source
was coal at 41%, natural gas at 22%, nuclear at 11%, hydro at 16%, other sources
(solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, etc.) at 6% and oil at 4%. Coal and natural gas
were the most used energy fuels for generating electricity.
67% of increase in energy consumption has been seen in 2019 in comparison to 2014
 Human energy consumption has grown steadily .throughout human history. Early
humans had modest energy requirements, mostly food and fuel for fires to cook and
keep warm. In today's society, humans consume as much as 110 times as much
energy per person as early humans. Most of the energy we use today come from
fossil fuels (stored solar energy). But fossils fuels have a disadvantage in that they
are non-renewable on a human time scale, and cause other potentially harmful
effects on the environment. In any event, the exploitation of all energy sources (with
the possible exception of direct solar energy used for heating), ultimately rely on
materials on planet Earth
5 1/18/2021 “Time spent among trees is never time wasted.” —Anonymous
3.Types Of Energy Resources
 Conventional Resources { NON – RENEWABLE }
1.These sources of energy are also known as NON – RENEWABLE SOURCEOF
ENERGY and are available in limited quantity apart from hydro-electric power. Further, it
can be classified under commercial and non-commercial energy.
2. Conventional energy sources such as natural gas, oil, coal, or nuclear are finite but still
hold the majority of the energy market.
3. Conventional energy sources can cause several different types of pollution. Some of
the most common ones are air pollution, acid rain, and greenhouse gasses.
4. Example – Nuclear Energy, Coal, Gas, Petroleum
The efficiency of the energy source is high
This energy source is a well-known source
The production expenses are low
It is not environmentally friendly
When used on a longer run, can deplete soon
6 1/18/2021 “He that plants trees loves others besides himself.” —Thomas Fuller
 Non – Conventional { RENEWABLE }
1.These non-conventional sources are also known as RENEWABLE SOURCESOF
ENERGY .
2.A source of energy is considered renewable if it comes from natural sources or
processes that are constantly replenished. Examples are solar (from the sun),
wind, water, geothermal (from the earth) and biomass (from organic materials).
3.Examples - solar energy, bioenergy, tidal energy and wind energy.
These sources of energy are environmentally friendly.
They are inexhaustible.
They are easy to operate.
Wind energy is one of the non-conventional sources of energy which is
expensive and can be a cause of noise pollution.
Radioactive wastes are produced in nuclear energy.
7 1/18/2021 The use of solar energy has not been opened up because the oil industry does not own the sun. -RALPH NADER
4. Exploitation Of Energy Resources
Energy is the basis of industrial civilization; without energy, modern life would cease to exist. However, the exploitation,
exploration, conversion, and use of energy comes with effects that impact on the environment in one way or another. The
different types and sources of energy also have different impacts on the environment and, to varying degrees, depending
on whether it is renewable or non-renewable energy type.
8 1/18/2021 The use of alternative energy is inevitable as fossil fuels are finite. - GAWDAT BAHGAT
9 1/18/2021 The road to safer, cleaner future has not been straight, but it is a one-way street. -ANDREW BEEBE
5. Need OfTime
Energy conservation is the effort made to reduce the consumption of
energy by using less of an energy service. This can be achieved either
by using energy more efficiently (using less energy for a constant
service) or by reducing the amount of service used (for example, by
driving less). Energy conservation is a part of the concept of Eco-
sufficiency.
WhatYou Can Do –
1. More use of Renewable Energy Resources.
2. TurnOFF light when not in use.
3. Use recycled products
4. If you’re boiling water, use a kettle or put a lid on the saucepan
the water will come to the boil sooner and use less energy.
5. Switch to energy efficient appliances.
6. Unplug Devices when not in use.
10 1/18/2021 The way to bring gas prices down is to end our dependence on oil and use the renewable sources that can give us the equivalent of $1 per gallon gasoline. -AL GORE
