4. Τhe origins of Karagiozis shadow theater are unknown.
Karagiozis is a poor man who lives in a shabby hut with his
wife and children, during the Turkish occupation in Greece.
5. They are extremely poor, barefooted and lacking the basic
food. Karagiozis is cunning, taking advantage of the Turkish
people and when he comes across food, he does not miss the
opportunity to eat, not even giving any to his children.
6. He fools everyone and plays tricks on them, but always under
the profile of the poor, deprived Greek.
7. The scene is always set between the shabby hut of Karagiozis and the
“sarai”,that is the palace of the Turkish Pasha, which is right opposite
Karagiozis’s hut, so he always knows what is going on inside the palace.
8. The name Karagiozis itself could derive from Turkish, as “kara”
means black in Turkish, a word which could probably refer to
his skin color.
9. There are countless stories that unfold here, attributing to
Karagiozis innumerable characteristics and roles –that of
Karagiozis and Alexander the Great…
16. AGLAIA: Karagiozis' wife. The character of a poor Greek
housekeeper who tries to earn some money working for well-
off families.
17. KOLLITIRIA: The three sons of Karagiozis, Kollitiris, Kopritis
and Mirikogos. Kolllitiris, appears more often on the screen,
he has exactly his father's character and he is very charming
and amusing.
18. BARBA-GIORGOS: He is Karagiozis' uncle born in Roumeli. He
represents the original Greek man of the mountains whose
character remained incorrupt. He is strong, honest and pure.
19. THE PASHA: He represents the Turkish authority and the power. Dressed
as a rich commander, he is serious, severe and imposing
20. VEZIROPOULA: Pasha's daughter. A young girl accustomed to
easy life who respects her father and seems to obey him but
she can succeed anything successfully because she is cunning
21. HADZIAVATIS: The character or "rajah" (the Greek under the Turkish
occupation) who keeps living under the shadow of the Turkish rule. On
the one side he is sly, flattener, weak, coward, but foxy. On the other,
he represents the type of the typical breadwinner, he is kind and trust-
worthy. His profession is town crier o mediator and he works for Pasha.
22. DIONYSIUS (Nionios): He is from the island of Zakinthos and he is
dressed like a count, in top hat and tails. He is a short man but brave
and independent. He is civilized, dignified, pure and talks very fast as
everybody in the island. He satirizes the type of fallen aristocrat who
thinks that comes from a rich and noble family.
23. MORFONIOS: (Omorfonios="Pretty boy"). His real name is Zacharias,
he has big head and nose too, that's why he speaks through it. No
matter how ugly he is, he thinks he is beautiful.
