M.Tech: Nano–Nickel by ball milling: thermal stability and deformation characteristics
• We intend to use high energy rate ball milling together with sintering to produce bulk nano-Ni for
further study in two phases: (a) microstructural stability and superplasticity; (b) production of
bimodal grain size distributions and characterizing strength and ductility.

4. • The thermal stability of nano-Ni samples will be characterized using differential scanning
calorimetry (DSC), and conventional isothermal annealing. The characterization of microstructure
and micro texture will be carried out on annealed samples by electron back scatter diffraction
(EBSD) using a field-emission gun scanning electron microscope. Selected samples will be
examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to observe the changes in grain
morphologies.
• High temperature experiments will be conducted over a range of temperatures to evaluate the
possibility of super plasticity in nano-Ni without any S.
• Powders at different stages of milling, or milled and unmilled powders, will be used to produce
materials with a range of bimodal grain size distributions for subsequent tests of strength and
ductility.
