This document provides guidelines for citing cases in legal documents, including: 1) Citing cases fully with all relevant details like parties, date, jurisdiction, and arbitrator. 2) For merit/seniority cases, include the relevant contract language to allow comparison. 3) Summarize the case yourself rather than using excerpts, using excerpts only to reveal the arbitrator's reasoning. 4) For discipline cases, always note the grievor's length of service and record to allow for comparison to the cited case. 5) It can be difficult to use cases of a different type (e.g. promotion vs layoff) due to differing contract language.
