Cloud-ready data protection
What’s new in Feature Pack 2 (FP2)
2. Overview
Backup Exec™ 16 delivers powerful, flexible, and trusted data protection designed for your entire infrastructure regardless of
platform: virtual, physical or cloud. With Backup Exec, you get fast, reliable protection of data and systems at every level, as well as
advanced integration with the most recent releases of Microsoft® Server, Microsoft® Hyper-V and VMware® vSphere®. In a matter
of minutes, you can recover anything including VMs, servers, databases, files, and granular application objects. Protect one to
thousands of virtual machines from a single user console, optimizing performance and efficiency. Backup Exec saves time, money
and helps ensure your critical information is always protected and easily recoverable.
This paper will discuss the following new features and improvements introduced in FP2 that further extend the core capabilities of
the Backup Exec platform:
Deduplication to Cloud
As customers begin the transformation of moving their data centers into the cloud or into multi-cloud environments, deduplication
becomes more important than ever. Backup Exec with OpenDedupe integration will now support customers that require
deduplication to help them realize the cost savings that are commonly associated with a cloud centric environment. The amount of
data that must be sent over the Internet to the cloud as well as the data stored in the cloud is reduced, saving both time and costs.
OpenDedup provides an open source filesystem, SDFS that Backup Exec leverages for inline deduplication to local or cloud storage
targets.

3. Features:
In-Line deduplication to a Cloud Storage Backend – SDFS can send all of its data to AWS, AZURE, Google, or any S3
compliant backend.
Performance – Compressed Multi-Threaded upload and download of data to the cloud.
Local Cache – SDFS will cache the most recently accessed data locally. This is configurable but set to 10 GB by default
Security – All data can be encrypted using AES-CBC 256 when sent to the cloud
Throttling – Upload and download speeds can be throttled.
Cloud Recovery/Replication – All local metadata is replicated to the cloud and can be recovered back to local volume.
AWS Region Support – Supports all AWS Regions
Benefits:
Deduplication to cloud provides the following benefits:
Reduce the amount of data that is stored.
Reduce backup bandwidth
Reduce the amount of data that needs to be sent
Reduce backup windows
Reduce infrastructure

S3 Compatible Cloud Storage
S3 provides the most powerful object storage platform available in the cloud today. Backup Exec broadens cloud storage through
the generic S3 provider enabling greater flexibility to users. You can now configure any S3 compatible cloud storage devices with
Backup Exec.
Figure 2: Configuring S3-compatible cloud storage using BEMCLI
Once the S3 Compatible cloud storage device is configured in Backup Exec, you can target backups, restores, and duplicate jobs to
the s3 cloud server. Backup Exec’s DLM automatically delete expired backup sets on the S3 cloud storage just like any other
cloud/disk storage; also records all metadata of the information stored on the cloud server.

This allows customers to modernize backup and disaster recovery strategies to fully leverage the benefits of Private/Hybrid cloud
through seamless integration and an intuitive user interface.

Veritas Backup Exec™ CloudConnect Optimizer (CCO)
Veritas Backup Exec™ CloudConnect Optimizer is a new feature, which suggests the number of “Write” connections that Backup
Exec Administrator can set for backup jobs targeted for a given Cloud Storage provider’s device, so that backup job won’t fail and
available bandwidth can be used optimally. CloudConnect Optimizer helps customers fine tune their Cloud Storage Backup
Settings and addresses two main issues that they are likely to encounter during their cloud backups.

Detect and correct variations in the “Write Connections” setting so that backups are able to better utilize the available
network bandwidth.
Minimize cloud backup job failures by suggesting a “Write Connections” value suitable for low network bandwidth
connections.
Expanded Cloud Support
Backup Exec users benefit from cloud storage choices through support for the following Azure cloud storage regions, enabling
greater flexibility and economy:
Microsoft Azure Government Cloud
Microsoft Azure Germany.
Support of Regional storage class for Google
To improve accessibility of cloud storage data, Backup Exec 16 FP2 supports the Regional storage class for Google cloud storage.
Veritas Backup Exec™ Migration Assistant
Backup Exec Migration Assistant lets you migrate your data from one Backup Exec server (source) to another Backup Exec server
(destination). You must run the Migration Assistant on the destination server.
6. Figure 5: Backup Exec Migration Assistant screenshot
The Migration Assistant migrates all Backup Exec configuration and data from the source server to destination server. The
migration does not modify the original database or the configuration on the source server. You can continue using the source server
if you face any issues with the migration Best Practices for using the Backup Exec Migration Assistant can be found here.
Customers with a valid license for Backup Exec 16 can open a support case for assistance moving from Backup Exec 2010 to Backup
Exec 16. For more information on the Backup Exec Migration Assistant, refer to the following tech note:
