- You want to talk about vCloud Air – I want to talk about this guy – a story is told that at the end of one semester, Einstein handed the exam papers he had set for his students to his intern. As the intern glanced at the papers he said: “I am sorry professor, but there seems to be some mistake, these are the same questions as last year”, Einstein turned to him and said “oh no, no mistake, the questions are the same, but this year, the answers are different” It’s the same story here….
- As early as 2009 it became clear that virtualisation while creating profound change and significant benefit, was a transitional technology. In his 2008 book “the big switch” Nick Carr identified the twin technologies of virtualisation and the internet as leading to something much greater. Something we now call “the cloud” At ViFX we have built our business and our reputation on bringing clients the benefits of the transition to virtualisation and the cloud. If you have heard me before, then you might be familiar with my argument that the journey is both economically driven (the benefits of agility and cost efficiency will bake “cloud” the dominant choice in the long run), and not optional – we are on this journey like it or not, and our only choice is how quickly we can achieve the benefits – ideally before our competition does. This means that he biggest challenge for large organisations is how to make progress given substantial inertia, investment and risk aversion. As you will see over the next hour, we now see a path through complexity and architecture that delivers the benefits of hybrid infrastructure – secure, sovereign data through in house resources with seamless connection to on-demand, scaleable, self serve and pay as you go public cloud resources in vCloud air.

Hollywood studios can release new movies directly to millions of viewers on their TVs, computer screens, and mobile devices…instantly. And, if you’re like me, you prefer the convenience of on-demand entertainment where you can relax in your own home, wearing your pajamas, snuggled on your own couch. This liquid environment has created so many new business opportunities.

Everything we do starts with an orientation around applications. What business cares about is expedient access to applications. But the application landscape within most businesses is diverse: there are traditional, client-server applications, there are new modern, cloud-native applications. And IT needs to manage ALL of them. Serving apps efficiently all starts with the architecture of the underlying infrastructure and data center. A few years ago, VMware introduced the concept of a software-defined data center. We believe a software-defined data center is the best architecture for this instant, secure and fluid model of IT. VMware’s architecture for the SDDC builds upon the core concepts that made compute virtualization so radically impactful, namely abstraction and pooling…and applied those virtualization fundamentals to the other key assets within the data center: storage and networking. This architecture can be leveraged not just in your on premises data center, or your private cloud, but also by your public clouds. For example, your data center can extend to the VMware vCloud Air public cloud or one of the many managed clouds within the vCloud Air Network of service providers. The result is one unified hybrid cloud. All of these environments are managed from a common cloud management platform. Built upon the software-defined data center architecture, we call this unified hybrid cloud “One Cloud for Any Application”. It runs on a wide variety of hardware infrastructure…whether you want to leverage your existing infrastructure, or adopt converged or even hyper converged infrastructure…One Cloud offers complete choice. Now we talked about how applications are ultimately what users care about. Our users are increasingly expecting to consume their apps on the devices of their choice. Our Business Mobility solutions enable the safe consumption of applications and content on any device…all effectively managed by IT.
