The document describes various conventions typically found on magazine covers. It discusses elements like the masthead, tagline, central image, banner, anchorage text, and barcode/date/issue number. It then analyzes a specific magazine cover promoting the film Maleficent. Key elements highlighted include the central positioning of Angelina Jolie, bold film names to attract different interests, use of bright colors likely aimed at older audiences, and promotional text/phrases to engage readers and portray the magazine's reliability.
2. Typical Features
Masthead- features on all magazine covers which is located at the top of the magazine
and indicated which company it belongs to for example,Vogue. It is usually the largest
text on the page.
Tagline-
Image- this is the central image of the magazine and it is usually a mid-shot involving the
main actor from the film that is featured. It portrays the theme of the film.
Banner- this gives the overall information about the magazine and what is inside it.
Buzzwords- usually offers including words such as ‘exclusive and ‘free’ capturing the
readers attention. It is used to help engage them in buying the magazine.
Anchorage text- the text that overlaps the image to inform the reader of what the story
could involve. Most of the time it is a quote from an interview.
Barcode, Date, Issue Number- something that a magazine should always have.
4. The CVI is positioned in the middle of the
magazine so that the cover lines and the splash
can go around her which man suggest that she
is the center of attention and this idea is further
emphasized by the fact that the splash says
‘Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent heads up our EPIC
BLOCKBUSTER ISSUE’ which means that she is
introducing or opening up the magazine issue.
The cover lines all have film names in bold so
that they can easily be spotted by the audience
as even though the main attraction is the
Maleficent spread, other people may be more
interested in another film, therefore it is
important to make it clear that other films are
also mentioned/talked about in this issue.
The color scheme is quite a dynamic and bold
one; yellow, white and dark blue may be used
to accentuate the CVI.The bold nature of the
colors may also suggest that this film magazine
is aimed at the more older age range as the
colors do not exude a softer atmosphere which
is associated with the younger age range.
By using the actress’s name, it engages
audiences because she is a famous and
popular actress therefore if the audience
sees her name, they may feel more
inclined to buy the magazine.
The banner that goes across the bottom half of the
magazine is in a bright yellow and blue in order to house
the dull color of images as well as to make them stand from
the CVI.The banner also resembles a film tape so it stresses
how it is associated with the film.
By adding the self-appraisal
statement of ‘The world’s best movie
reviews’ makes the magazine seem
more reliable and the readers are
more likely to buy the magazine.
The word ‘EPIC’, which is a jargon in
the film industry is repeated twice
and it may be to accentuate the
brilliance of the film that they are
promoting as well as to emphasize
the brilliance of their own magazine.
