7. Expert Opinion ____
7.1 Andy Brink - Global Technology and Business Development
Manager Fibres and Composites Business Unit, Michelman
Visiongain sought the expertise of Andy Brink, Ph.D. in Polymer Science from Va Tech. At the time
Va Tech was at the NSF Centre for High Performance Adhesives and Composites. His research
was on the interface of carbon fibre / PEEK composites. He then worked at Eastman in their
Engineering Plastics Research Group, and later joined Reichhold to be the Technology Manager
for their Binders and Sizings Group and was later the Applications Development Manager for
Composites. In 2000 Andy started a company called Hydrosize® Technologies where they
developed and manufactured sizings for the composites industry. In 2008 Michelman, Inc. acquired
Hydrosize. Currently Andy is the Technology Manager for the Fibres and Composites Business
Unit at Michelman. Michelman manufactures a wide range of lubricants and film formers used in
sizings formulations for the Composites industry.
7.1.1 Recent Trends and Developments
Visiongain: What are the recent trends and developments in the CFRP Market?
Andy Brink: We are seeing carbon fibre being used to reinforce a wide range of resins and not
just epoxy anymore. Particularly the area of carbon fibre / Thermoplastic resins seems to be
growing.
7.1.2 Areas for Potential Growth
Visiongain: In what applications do you expect to see growth in the market?
Andy Brink: The largest application that is driving the market is the automotive sector. The USA’s
Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations demand a reduction in vehicle weight, and
composites are ideal materials to reduce weight. Additionally, the EU has put in place a
comprehensive legal framework to reduce CO2 emissions from new light duty vehicles as part of
efforts to ensure it meets its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol
and beyond. Cars manufacturers are obliged to ensure that their new car fleet does not emit more
than an average of 130 grams of CO2 per kilometre (g CO2/Km) by 2015 and 95g by 2020.
