ABOUT
VIVERGO
FUELS
THE UK’S LARGEST BIOETHANOL PRODUCER
04
vivergofuels.com
- Vivergo Fuels ’ plant in East Yorkshire
is the UK’s largest, and Europe’s second
largest, producer of bioethanol, a low-
carbon renewable transport fuel which
is blended with petrol
- We produce up to 420m litres of
bioethanol, enough to meet about
half of the UK’s current demand
- The bioethanol is made from 1.1
million tonnes of feed wheat,
sourced from nearly 900 farms
across the region
- The feed wheat used is a lower
grade than that used for human
consumption, such as in bread
or biscuit making
- We are also the country’s largest
single production site for animal feed,
delivering 500,000 tonnes of high
protein feed to over 800 farms across
the UK, enough for about 20% of
the UK’s dairy herd
- The current use of bioethanol within
petrol vehicles is the equivalent of
taking 180,000 cars off the road in the
UK – but we can do much better!
- The fermentation process used at
our plant in East Yorkshire makes
it the UK’s largest brewery
- Opened in 2013 in the heart of the
UK’s wheat-growing belt and with
easy access to Europe’s ports network,
we represent a £350m investment into
the Humber region and the wider UK
economy
- Employing more than 150
skilled people at our production
site in Hull and head office in Hessle,
Vivergo Fuels supports over 3,000 jobs
directly and indirectly, contributing
£600m to the UK economy
- We are an official partner of
Hull UK City of Culture 2017,
having been an original ‘bid
angel’, and many of our employees
are volunteering to support
cultural events and charities
throughout the year
- We are one of the Government’s
Northern Powerhouse Partners,
playing a key role in championing
the North of England and the
Humber region, promoting its
economy and aspiration to be
the UK’s energy estuary

“VIVERGO FUELS IS A WORLD SCALE BIOFUELS BUSINESS WHICH
PRODUCES ENOUGH BIOETHANOL TO MEET HALF OF THE UK’S
CURRENT DEMAND, AND ENOUGH HIGH PROTEIN ANIMAL
FEED FOR 20% OF THE UK DAIRY HERD.”
vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com
- The UK is currently failing to
reach its statutory targets on the
amount of renewables used in
transport, in line with the Renewable
Energy Directive and the UK’s Climate
Change Act – bioethanol is one of
the quickest, easiest and most cost
effective ways of meeting these targets
- Transport represents 24%
of total greenhouse gas
emissions, higher than any other
sector in the UK economy, and
are 1.3% higher than in 2013 –
bioethanol is vital in helping to
decrease these emissions and tackle
climate change
- Bioethanol helps to displace
our reliance on fossil fuels which can
have a negative impact
upon our environment
- Vivergo Fuels ’ bioethanol offers
greenhouse gas emissions savings of
approximately 60% against standard
petrol production
- The emissions savings made so
far is the equivalent of taking
180,000 cars off the road
- Ethanol is not carcinogenic, whilst
several chemicals contained within
petrol are, so bioethanol blended
fuel helps to reduce the carcinogens
produced by transport
- The oxygen contained within
ethanol helps the fuel to burn
better and increases the efficiency
of the engine, lowering the
hydrocarbons that are released
- Currently all petrol bought in
the UK contains about 5%
bioethanol, known as E5
- Benzene and Butadiene emissions,
both of which are highly
carcinogenic, decrease with higher
levels of ethanol blending in fuel
- Our bioethanol is International
Sustainability and Carbon
Certification (ISCC) accredited and is
already used at thousands of the UK’s
petrol pumps
- Ethanol was the first ever road
transport fuel and was used to power
the Model T Ford
- It is a type of renewable energy
because it is made from a source
which can be constantly regrown and
which also absorbs carbon dioxide
during its growth
- Bioethanol is mixed with petrol only,
which produces around 300% less
‘Nox’ pollutants (nitric oxide and
nitrogen dioxide) than diesel

ABOUT
BIOETHANOL
“OUR BIOETHANOL IS A LOW CARBON, RENEWABLE
SOURCE OF ENERGY USED IN TRANSPORT FUELS TO
LOWER GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND
IMPROVE AIR QUALITY.”
vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com
- The majority of Electric Vehicles are
actually petrol hybrids which can also
use E10 petrol
- The use of E10 requires no consumer
behavioural change and is predicted
to cost the consumer no more than
1p per litre more – or £20 per year for
an average motorist – the majority of
which is taxation rather than fuel cost
- E10 relies upon a high ‘crop cap’
giving farmers the freedom to use
their produce for this purpose
- E10 would mean a stronger and more
stable domestic market for British
wheat farmers, who would earn £10
per tonne above export value
- An increase in the ethanol blending
level would also lead to an increase
in the amount of protein-rich animal
feed produced, giving British dairy
farmers a domestic source of feed and
reducing their reliance on
imported products
- At a time of increasingly uncertain
international trading circumstances,
and in the context of Brexit, E10
increases domestic supply and
demand and lessens Britain’s reliance
on foreign markets
- Its introduction would bring certainty
to British business, UK investors,
British arable and dairy farmers,
whilst also supporting economic
growth and job creation- E10 is a low-carbon renewable
transport fuel consisting of unleaded
petrol blended with 10% bioethanol,
which we would like to see
introduced in the UK
- This would mean a doubling of the
current bioethanol level in petrol
- E10 is widely used across the world
including in the USA, New Zealand,
Australia, Finland, France, Belgium
and Germany
- Introducing E10 in the UK would
make emissions savings equivalent to
taking 700,000 cars off the road
- Without full implementation of E10,
the UK would fail to meet its 2020
renewable energy directive targets
and be off-course for its 2030 climate
change act objectives
- Almost all cars built since 2000 – 95%
of those on the road – are warrantied
to run on E10 and since March 2016 it
has been the optimal reference fuel
for new cars
- The introduction of E10 would not
affect the availability of premium
‘98’ petrol brands such as those often
used by classic and sports car owners

- Vivergo Fuels is the UK’s biggest single
buyer of feed wheat with the largest
‘tip point’ in the country
- We buy 1.1 million tonnes of feed
wheat, sourced from nearly 900 farms
across the region
- We offer a ready domestic market
for the UK’s wheat surplus, which
otherwise results in farmers exporting
up to 3 million tonnes per year, at a
£10 per tonne loss
- The feed wheat that we use is of a low
grade which would not be used for
human consumption such as in bread
or biscuit making
- The average distance that we source
our wheat from is 34 miles from our
plant in Hull, supporting sustainability
through minimising transportation
- We are the largest single production
site for protein rich animal feed,
delivering 500,000 tonnes of feed to
over 800 farms across the UK from
the north of Scotland to the west of
Devon, enough for about 20% of the
UK’s dairy herd
- Our animal feed displaces the need
for soya products imported from
South America and is a sustainable,
traceable, reliable and high quality
source of feed for pastoral farmers
- Our domestic supply of animal
feed reduces dairy farmers’ reliance
on imports at a time of increasing
international trading uncertainty and
in the context of Brexit
- Our animal feed’s protein content
results in increased milk production
from dairy cows, and contains
the roughage and vitamins which
would otherwise need to be sourced
separately

locations such as Argentina
- Our production uses animal feed
grade wheat rather than the higher-
quality milling wheat commonly
used in the human food chain, and
delivers a higher quality animal feed
than the wheat it consumes
- Vivergo Fuels is exploring the
development of advanced biofuels,
which could deliver even greater
environmental, agricultural and
economic benefits
- We are also investigating the
use of existing waste products,
which would further increase
our greenhouse gas savings

FAQs
FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONS
Q. IS E10 FUEL USED ELSEWHERE
IN THE WORLD?
A. E10 is currently widely available across
Europe including in France, Germany,
Belgium and Finland, and further afield
including USA, Australia, New Zealand
and Brazil. In some countries such as
USA and Brazil much higher versions
are available, including E85.
Q. HOW MUCH WILL E10
COST THE CONSUMER?
A. The cost is largely dependent upon tax
levels and global ethanol and oil prices
which can fluctuate, however E10 is
predicted to cost no more than 1p per
litre more at the pump – or £20 per
year, about a pint of milk per week, for
an average motorist. The majority of
this cost is taxation rather than fuel and
many Governments have introduced it
in a cost-neutral manner.
Q. CAN E10 HARM CAR ENGINES?
A. Cars built since 2000 – 92% of those on
the road by 2015 – are warrantied to
run on E10. Every new petrol car sold
since 2011 is fully warranted to use E10
and since March 2016 it has been the
optimal reference fuel for new cars,
meaning that performance will be
improved by its use. Those made before
2000 are almost always compatible but
may not be warrantied because the
fuel was not widely used at that point.
A small number of older ‘classic’ cars
and sports cars are recommended to
use premium ‘98’ petrol brands (which
also currently contain 5% ethanol)
and these will still be available and
unaffected at petrol stations. Any
motorists uncomfortable with using a
‘new’ fuel can also use these premium
brands.
Upon introduction, there will be a
public information campaign about
E10 which will include a website with
compatibility details of all makes and
models of cars, and this information
will also be provided at petrol pumps.
Q. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ELECTRIC
VEHICLES AND DOES E10 UNDERMINE
A MOVE TOWARDS THEM?
A. There are a range of technologies
which can play complimentary roles in
decarbonising transport and improving
air quality, and electric vehicles are a
vital part of this long term ambition.
However, in the short term, there are
still questions around the range, charge
time and infrastructure needed for
electric vehicles to become dominant.
This is reflected by the relatively
low numbers on the road – electric
vehicles still only represent less than
2% of annual sales. To gain the
same environmental impact as the
introduction of E10, we would need to
replace over 2 million petrol cars with
electric vehicles – there are currently
around 90,000.
The majority of existing electric vehicles
are actually ‘hybrids’ which use both an
electric motor and a petrol engine, and
would therefore also use E10 fuel.
Q. WHAT IMPACT DOES BREXIT HAVE
ON VIVERGO FUELS AND THE UK
BIOETHANOL INDUSTRY?
A. The Renewable Energy Directive, which
sets targets on renewables in transport
by 2020, is enshrined in UK law and
is binding irrespective of Brexit. The
UK’s own Climate Change Act and
its Carbon Budgets are even more
stringent, and there is clearly a need to
tackle climate change and air quality
for its own sake.
There is undoubtedly a more uncertain
international trading environment
currently, owing to a range of global
issues including Brexit. Against this
backdrop, we offer the security of
a domestic demand for UK wheat
farmers and a domestic supply of
ethanol for UK fuel and animal feed for
UK pastoral farmers.
FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONS
21
vivergofuels.com
vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com
22
Q. DOES BIOETHANOL IMPROVE AIR
QUALITY AS WELL AS HELP TO TACKLE
CLIMATE CHANGE?
A. Climate change is largely the result of
the burning of fossil fuels, including
the use of oil (in petrol or diesel) within
vehicles, and bioethanol plays a role in
decreasing their use. Air quality issues
are caused by other pollutants present
in those fuels, and bioethanol can also
help to cut some of these.
For example, several carcinogenic
chemicals within petrol, such as
benzene and butadiene, are reduced
by the increased blending of ethanol.
Additionally, bioethanol is only mixed
with petrol, which produces around
300% less ‘Nox’ pollutants (nitric oxide
and nitrogen dioxide) than diesel.
Because of the oxygen present within
ethanol, more of the fuel is burned
and an engine is made more efficient,
meaning that fewer hydrocarbons are
released into the air.
Air pollution is linked to heart disease,
lung cancer, worsening asthma and
poor lung development in children. It
is estimated to lead to the premature
deaths of around 40,000 people every
year in the UK.
Q. DOES BIOFUELS PRODUCTION
INCREASE FOOD PRICES?
A. The crops used for UK bioethanol are
of a lower grade to food crops meant
for human consumption, for example
Vivergo Fuels uses feed wheat which
would normally go into animal feed.
Across Europe, bioethanol production
uses only 2% of the grain supply, which
is unlikely to be a large enough volume
to significantly alter food prices. Other
factors including weather, disease,
conflict and crude oil costs contribute
to fluctuations in food price.
FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONS
23
Q. DOES BIOFUEL PRODUCTION
ENCOURAGE ‘LAND GRABBING’?
A. Globally, less than 1% of agricultural
land is used in biofuel production.
The feed wheat used by Vivergo
Fuels is mainly sourced from growers
in the local area, with the average
distance of a farm being just 34 miles
from our plant. Prior to our existence,
most of this feed wheat would have
been exported or fields would be left
empty. This feed wheat can now be
used domestically at a £10 per tonne
better rate for farmers, to produce high
value commodities that the UK would
usually import, thus reducing land use
elsewhere in the world.
The UN has revealed that the use
of animal feed co-products from EU
biofuels production reduced global
land use by about 3 million hectares,
an area the size of Belgium, due to the
yields of biofuel crops grown in the EU
being substantially higher than those of
soybean in South America.
Despite the use of biofuels being
widespread in Europe, large areas of
agricultural land remain unused – 1.7m
hectares of land are idle and 500,000
hectares are abandoned.
Q. HOW DOES BIOETHANOL’S
GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS
COMPARE WITH THOSE OF FOSSIL
FUELS?
A. Vivergo Fuels ’ bioethanol offers
greenhouse gas savings of about
57% compared to standard petrol,
the equivalent of removing 180,000
cars from the road. This includes all
the carbon in growing, shipping and
manufacture. Vivergo Fuels is actively
researching ways to increase these GHG
savings.
Bioethanol is renewable because its
sources can be re-grown, whilst fossil
fuels are finite. Additionally, the feed
wheat that our bioethanol is made
from absorbs carbon dioxide whilst it
grows, and bioethanol blended with
petrol is safer for the environment and
peoples’ health than diesel.

  • 3. vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com ABOUT VIVERGO FUELS THE UK’S LARGEST BIOETHANOL PRODUCER 04 vivergofuels.com - Vivergo Fuels ’ plant in East Yorkshire is the UK’s largest, and Europe’s second largest, producer of bioethanol, a low- carbon renewable transport fuel which is blended with petrol - We produce up to 420m litres of bioethanol, enough to meet about half of the UK’s current demand - The bioethanol is made from 1.1 million tonnes of feed wheat, sourced from nearly 900 farms across the region - The feed wheat used is a lower grade than that used for human consumption, such as in bread or biscuit making - We are also the country’s largest single production site for animal feed, delivering 500,000 tonnes of high protein feed to over 800 farms across the UK, enough for about 20% of the UK’s dairy herd - The current use of bioethanol within petrol vehicles is the equivalent of taking 180,000 cars off the road in the UK – but we can do much better! - The fermentation process used at our plant in East Yorkshire makes it the UK’s largest brewery - Opened in 2013 in the heart of the UK’s wheat-growing belt and with easy access to Europe’s ports network, we represent a £350m investment into the Humber region and the wider UK economy - Employing more than 150 skilled people at our production site in Hull and head office in Hessle, Vivergo Fuels supports over 3,000 jobs directly and indirectly, contributing £600m to the UK economy - We are an official partner of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, having been an original ‘bid angel’, and many of our employees are volunteering to support cultural events and charities throughout the year - We are one of the Government’s Northern Powerhouse Partners, playing a key role in championing the North of England and the Humber region, promoting its economy and aspiration to be the UK’s energy estuary vivergofuels.com 05 “VIVERGO FUELS IS A WORLD SCALE BIOFUELS BUSINESS WHICH PRODUCES ENOUGH BIOETHANOL TO MEET HALF OF THE UK’S CURRENT DEMAND, AND ENOUGH HIGH PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED FOR 20% OF THE UK DAIRY HERD.”
  • 4. vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com - The UK is currently failing to reach its statutory targets on the amount of renewables used in transport, in line with the Renewable Energy Directive and the UK’s Climate Change Act – bioethanol is one of the quickest, easiest and most cost effective ways of meeting these targets - Transport represents 24% of total greenhouse gas emissions, higher than any other sector in the UK economy, and are 1.3% higher than in 2013 – bioethanol is vital in helping to decrease these emissions and tackle climate change - Bioethanol helps to displace our reliance on fossil fuels which can have a negative impact upon our environment - Vivergo Fuels ’ bioethanol offers greenhouse gas emissions savings of approximately 60% against standard petrol production - The emissions savings made so far is the equivalent of taking 180,000 cars off the road - Ethanol is not carcinogenic, whilst several chemicals contained within petrol are, so bioethanol blended fuel helps to reduce the carcinogens produced by transport - The oxygen contained within ethanol helps the fuel to burn better and increases the efficiency of the engine, lowering the hydrocarbons that are released - Currently all petrol bought in the UK contains about 5% bioethanol, known as E5 - Benzene and Butadiene emissions, both of which are highly carcinogenic, decrease with higher levels of ethanol blending in fuel - Our bioethanol is International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) accredited and is already used at thousands of the UK’s petrol pumps - Ethanol was the first ever road transport fuel and was used to power the Model T Ford - It is a type of renewable energy because it is made from a source which can be constantly regrown and which also absorbs carbon dioxide during its growth - Bioethanol is mixed with petrol only, which produces around 300% less ‘Nox’ pollutants (nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide) than diesel vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com 0706 ABOUT BIOETHANOL “OUR BIOETHANOL IS A LOW CARBON, RENEWABLE SOURCE OF ENERGY USED IN TRANSPORT FUELS TO LOWER GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND IMPROVE AIR QUALITY.”
  • 5. vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com - The majority of Electric Vehicles are actually petrol hybrids which can also use E10 petrol - The use of E10 requires no consumer behavioural change and is predicted to cost the consumer no more than 1p per litre more – or £20 per year for an average motorist – the majority of which is taxation rather than fuel cost - E10 relies upon a high ‘crop cap’ giving farmers the freedom to use their produce for this purpose - E10 would mean a stronger and more stable domestic market for British wheat farmers, who would earn £10 per tonne above export value - An increase in the ethanol blending level would also lead to an increase in the amount of protein-rich animal feed produced, giving British dairy farmers a domestic source of feed and reducing their reliance on imported products - At a time of increasingly uncertain international trading circumstances, and in the context of Brexit, E10 increases domestic supply and demand and lessens Britain’s reliance on foreign markets - Its introduction would bring certainty to British business, UK investors, British arable and dairy farmers, whilst also supporting economic growth and job creation- E10 is a low-carbon renewable transport fuel consisting of unleaded petrol blended with 10% bioethanol, which we would like to see introduced in the UK - This would mean a doubling of the current bioethanol level in petrol - E10 is widely used across the world including in the USA, New Zealand, Australia, Finland, France, Belgium and Germany - Introducing E10 in the UK would make emissions savings equivalent to taking 700,000 cars off the road - Without full implementation of E10, the UK would fail to meet its 2020 renewable energy directive targets and be off-course for its 2030 climate change act objectives - Almost all cars built since 2000 – 95% of those on the road – are warrantied to run on E10 and since March 2016 it has been the optimal reference fuel for new cars - The introduction of E10 would not affect the availability of premium ‘98’ petrol brands such as those often used by classic and sports car owners 0908 vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com “E10 FUEL IS ALREADY USED WIDELY ACROSS THE WORLD AND IS THE QUICKEST, EASIEST AND MOST COST EFFECTIVE STEP TOWARDS DECARBONISING TRANSPORT.” LEADING THE CALL FOR E10 THE GREENER FUEL A SWITCH TO E10 FROM EXISTING BLENDS IN THE UK WOULD BE EQUIVALENT TO TAKING 700,000 CARS OFF THE ROAD
  • 6. vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com DELIVERING FOR THE UK ECONOMY 1110 vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com “WE ARE PROUD TO BE A MAJOR EMPLOYER IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND, SUPPORTING THOUSANDS OF UK JOBS, BRITISH FARMERS AND SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT IN THE REGION - DELIVERING REAL GROWTH TO THE UK ECONOMY.” - Vivergo Fuels ’ plant in hull represents a £350m investment in the humber region - Vivergo Fuels supports over 3,000 jobs directly and indirectly through the supply chain such as in agriculture and logistics - We represent a £600m contribution to the UK economy - The market value of the wider ethanol industry across europe is close to €8bn - We employ over 150 highly skilled people at our production plant in Hull and our commercial office in Hessle - Many of those employed at our production site are in important STEM skill roles (Science, technology, engineering and manufacturing) - We also offer graduate programmes, apprenticeships and internships - British agriculture gains £1m per month more by selling their feed wheat to us rather than exporting it abroad - We contribute to an efficient ‘circular economy’ by using British wheat, producing animal feed for British farms and selling bioethanol which could help to fulfil the British market - We are an official partner of the Government’s Northern Powerhouse initiative, supporting growth and opportunity in the North of England
  • 7. vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com DELIVERING FOR UK FARMERS 1312 - Vivergo Fuels is the UK’s biggest single buyer of feed wheat with the largest ‘tip point’ in the country - We buy 1.1 million tonnes of feed wheat, sourced from nearly 900 farms across the region - We offer a ready domestic market for the UK’s wheat surplus, which otherwise results in farmers exporting up to 3 million tonnes per year, at a £10 per tonne loss - The feed wheat that we use is of a low grade which would not be used for human consumption such as in bread or biscuit making - The average distance that we source our wheat from is 34 miles from our plant in Hull, supporting sustainability through minimising transportation - We are the largest single production site for protein rich animal feed, delivering 500,000 tonnes of feed to over 800 farms across the UK from the north of Scotland to the west of Devon, enough for about 20% of the UK’s dairy herd - Our animal feed displaces the need for soya products imported from South America and is a sustainable, traceable, reliable and high quality source of feed for pastoral farmers - Our domestic supply of animal feed reduces dairy farmers’ reliance on imports at a time of increasing international trading uncertainty and in the context of Brexit - Our animal feed’s protein content results in increased milk production from dairy cows, and contains the roughage and vitamins which would otherwise need to be sourced separately SUPPORTING WHEAT FARMERS ACROSS THE REGION vivergofuels.com vivergofuels.com SUPPORTING PASTORAL FARMERS THROUGHOUT THE UK “WE ARE THE UK’S LARGEST BUYER OF FEED WHEAT AND LARGEST SUPPLIER OF PROTEIN-RICH ANIMAL FEED, REDUCING FARMERS’ RELIANCE ON IMPORTS AND EXPORTS AT AN INCREASINGLY UNCERTAIN TIME”

  • 9. vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com - Transport is responsible for 26% of Europe’s total greenhouse gas emissions - EU transport emissions have risen by 36% since 1990 - Our bioethanol is a low-carbon renewable fuel which offers greenhouse gas emissions savings of approximately 60% compared to standard petrol production - The emissions savings made so far is the equivalent of taking 180,000 cars off the road - Bioethanol blended with petrol can help to improve air quality by reducing the carcinogens and ‘Nox’ pollutants emitted by vehicles, particularly in urban environments - The oxygen contained within ethanol helps the fuel to burn better and increases the efficiency of the engine, lowering the hydrocarbons that are released - The carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted when the bioethanol is burnt in a vehicle is offset by the CO2 absorbed during the growing of the wheat crop used for production - Our co-product of animal feed reduces the UK’s reliance on less- sustainable soya products, imported and transported from distant locations such as Argentina - Our production uses animal feed grade wheat rather than the higher- quality milling wheat commonly used in the human food chain, and delivers a higher quality animal feed than the wheat it consumes - Vivergo Fuels is exploring the development of advanced biofuels, which could deliver even greater environmental, agricultural and economic benefits - We are also investigating the use of existing waste products, which would further increase our greenhouse gas savings vivergofuels.com 17 DELIVERING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT “TRANSPORT EMISSIONS ARE A MAJOR SOURCE OF GLOBAL EMISSIONS AND THERE IS AN URGENT NEED TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE AND IMPROVE AIR QUALITY. OUR BIOETHANOL OFFERS THIS WHILST ALSO SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES WITHIN BRITISH AGRICULTURE.” vivergofuels.com 1616

  • 11. vivergofuels.comvivergofuels.com 20 vivergofuels.com FAQs FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONS Q. IS E10 FUEL USED ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD? A. E10 is currently widely available across Europe including in France, Germany, Belgium and Finland, and further afield including USA, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil. In some countries such as USA and Brazil much higher versions are available, including E85. Q. HOW MUCH WILL E10 COST THE CONSUMER? A. The cost is largely dependent upon tax levels and global ethanol and oil prices which can fluctuate, however E10 is predicted to cost no more than 1p per litre more at the pump – or £20 per year, about a pint of milk per week, for an average motorist. The majority of this cost is taxation rather than fuel and many Governments have introduced it in a cost-neutral manner. Q. CAN E10 HARM CAR ENGINES? A. Cars built since 2000 – 92% of those on the road by 2015 – are warrantied to run on E10. Every new petrol car sold since 2011 is fully warranted to use E10 and since March 2016 it has been the optimal reference fuel for new cars, meaning that performance will be improved by its use. Those made before 2000 are almost always compatible but may not be warrantied because the fuel was not widely used at that point. A small number of older ‘classic’ cars and sports cars are recommended to use premium ‘98’ petrol brands (which also currently contain 5% ethanol) and these will still be available and unaffected at petrol stations. Any motorists uncomfortable with using a ‘new’ fuel can also use these premium brands. Upon introduction, there will be a public information campaign about E10 which will include a website with compatibility details of all makes and models of cars, and this information will also be provided at petrol pumps. Q. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND DOES E10 UNDERMINE A MOVE TOWARDS THEM? A. There are a range of technologies which can play complimentary roles in decarbonising transport and improving air quality, and electric vehicles are a vital part of this long term ambition. However, in the short term, there are still questions around the range, charge time and infrastructure needed for electric vehicles to become dominant. This is reflected by the relatively low numbers on the road – electric vehicles still only represent less than 2% of annual sales. To gain the same environmental impact as the introduction of E10, we would need to replace over 2 million petrol cars with electric vehicles – there are currently around 90,000. The majority of existing electric vehicles are actually ‘hybrids’ which use both an electric motor and a petrol engine, and would therefore also use E10 fuel. Q. WHAT IMPACT DOES BREXIT HAVE ON VIVERGO FUELS AND THE UK BIOETHANOL INDUSTRY? A. The Renewable Energy Directive, which sets targets on renewables in transport by 2020, is enshrined in UK law and is binding irrespective of Brexit. The UK’s own Climate Change Act and its Carbon Budgets are even more stringent, and there is clearly a need to tackle climate change and air quality for its own sake. There is undoubtedly a more uncertain international trading environment currently, owing to a range of global issues including Brexit. Against this backdrop, we offer the security of a domestic demand for UK wheat farmers and a domestic supply of ethanol for UK fuel and animal feed for UK pastoral farmers. Climate change is largely the result of the burning of fossil fuels, including the use of oil (in petrol or diesel) within vehicles, and bioethanol plays a role in decreasing their use. Air quality issues are caused by other pollutants present in those fuels, and bioethanol can also help to cut some of these. For example, several carcinogenic chemicals within petrol, such as benzene and butadiene, are reduced by the increased blending of ethanol. Additionally, bioethanol is only mixed with petrol, which produces around 300% less ‘Nox’ pollutants (nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide) than diesel. Because of the oxygen present within ethanol, more of the fuel is burned and an engine is made more efficient, meaning that fewer hydrocarbons are released into the air. Air pollution is linked to heart disease, lung cancer, worsening asthma and poor lung development in children. It is estimated to lead to the premature deaths of around 40,000 people every year in the UK. Q. DOES BIOFUELS PRODUCTION INCREASE FOOD PRICES? A. The crops used for UK bioethanol are of a lower grade to food crops meant for human consumption, for example Vivergo Fuels uses feed wheat which would normally go into animal feed. Across Europe, bioethanol production uses only 2% of the grain supply, which is unlikely to be a large enough volume to significantly alter food prices. Other factors including weather, disease, conflict and crude oil costs contribute to fluctuations in food price. FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONS 23 Q. DOES BIOFUEL PRODUCTION ENCOURAGE ‘LAND GRABBING’? A. Globally, less than 1% of agricultural land is used in biofuel production. The feed wheat used by Vivergo Fuels is mainly sourced from growers in the local area, with the average distance of a farm being just 34 miles from our plant. Prior to our existence, most of this feed wheat would have been exported or fields would be left empty. This feed wheat can now be used domestically at a £10 per tonne better rate for farmers, to produce high value commodities that the UK would usually import, thus reducing land use elsewhere in the world. The UN has revealed that the use of animal feed co-products from EU biofuels production reduced global land use by about 3 million hectares, an area the size of Belgium, due to the yields of biofuel crops grown in the EU being substantially higher than those of soybean in South America. Despite the use of biofuels being widespread in Europe, large areas of agricultural land remain unused – 1.7m hectares of land are idle and 500,000 hectares are abandoned. Q. HOW DOES BIOETHANOL’S GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS COMPARE WITH THOSE OF FOSSIL FUELS? A. Vivergo Fuels ’ bioethanol offers greenhouse gas savings of about 57% compared to standard petrol, the equivalent of removing 180,000 cars from the road. This includes all the carbon in growing, shipping and manufacture. Vivergo Fuels is actively researching ways to increase these GHG savings. Bioethanol is renewable because its sources can be re-grown, whilst fossil fuels are finite. Additionally, the feed wheat that our bioethanol is made from absorbs carbon dioxide whilst it grows, and bioethanol blended with petrol is safer for the environment and peoples’ health than diesel. FREQUENTLYASKEDQUESTIONS FOOD PRICES ARE ALSO INFLUENCED BY OTHER FACTORS SUCH AS OIL PRICE. ONLY 2% OF THE EU’S GRAIN SUPPLY IS USED BY BIOETHANOL.
