Rewriting the Rules: Institutional procedural change based on analysis of student feedback As part of a large JISC-supported institutional project on assessment and feedback, two different types of institutional data were analysed to identify potential changes to assessment procedures and practice. Comments from institutional student survey data were analysed to identify 10,000 comments relating to assessment. Coding of these comments enabled the project team to identify a series of areas for change which were common across the institution, rather than just using the survey data for course-level changes, which had happened in the past. This led to the production of new institutional assessment procedures designed to improve the student experience. Institutional records about assignment types, which had been produced simply to support course validation, were then analysed to discover the ten most common types of assignment in use across the institution. Detailed guidance on implementing the new procedures was then developed for these ten assignment types, which accounted for two-thirds of the total number of assignments being taken by students. The combination of data from different parts of the institution has enabled change to be made and supported in a way novel to the university.

Committed to providing a supportive and safe educational environment that fosters student engagement and success, James Cook University (JCU) has taken a proactive approach to the use of data in a dual-pronged approach to improve the student experience and curriculum design. Blackboard Analytics for Learn is a key tool within these initiatives. Analytics for Learn provides real-time data that can be used by staff in a variety of roles to support student success. This presentation will outline how JCU is adapting Analytics for Learn, including discussion of initial customisations made to 'out-of-the-box' reports and the development of personalised dashboards, as well as providing an overview of the coordinated approach to the staged 'roll-out' and adoption of reports and dashboards. This is a presentation I did last week (6/16/16) at the New Media Consortium (NMC) summer conference: The number of ed tech startups and the significant investment in adaptive courseware solutions can remind people of the 1860s gold rush: some prospered, but many failed. In the past two years of developing OpenStax Tutor, the OpenStax team has learned several valuable lessons that can benefit educators, digital courseware providers, and students from making costly miscalculations. Lessons learned and presented are 1) technology with high-quality content and assessment is most valuable; 2) instructor workflow is a highway, not a fork in the road; 3) emergence of data privacy standards can accelerate acceptance of digital courseware; and, 4) it's not about price, it's about value.

The development of professional expertise in medicine requires a lifelong commitment to education. During university training medical students encounter a wide variety of practical experiences making it difficult for them to monitor and evaluate their development towards clinical competence. The use of an eportfolio to collate feedback about their assessed performance can assist in making clearer connections between these experiences and aid in the transition to novice practitioners. Over the past year the University of Queensland’s medical program has been refining their approach to assessment in the clinical learning environment and has trialled the use of an eportfolio to manage the delivery of workplace-based assessments (WBAs). This paper outlines the design stages undertaken as well as the roadblocks that have been navigated concluding with an overview of the key lessons that emerged during the early stages of eportfolio adoption.

The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO) has a number of projects focused on defining and measuring learning outcomes working with Ontario's colleges and universities in partnership with international organisations. This presentation provides an overview of how learning outcomes are increasing being viewed as a means to evaluate higher education quality, and presents the challenges and successes of developing, demonstrating and assessing higher education learning outcomes in Ontario.
