ment during his first season in Lawton in 2017. Furr spent 13
seasons in the Oklahoma high school ranks with 10 State

29-9 in a series dating back to the 2006 season. WT has
claimed the last three meetings between the two teams
including a 7-6 thriller in last year’s LSC Semifinals in San

of Schaeffer Park since the facility opened prior to the 2011
season.

NFCA DII NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCHLIST

Hardin were named to the NFCA Division II Schutt Sports

THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE
Entering the week, LSC softball teams were 251-178 overall
this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the group is
currently 47-15 combined versus Heartland Conference teams
and 24-15 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
LSC teams are playing a single round-robin schedule with a
three-game series against each league opponent. The overall
LSC Champion will be the team(s) with the best winning
percentage in regular-season conference games, while the
winner of the postseason championship will be recognized
as LSC Tournament Champion and receive the league’s
automatic qualification into NCAA postseason.
LONE STAR CONFERENCE CAREER HOMERUN LEADER
West Texas A&M senior outfielder Ashley Hardin became
the new Lone Star Conference career leader in homeruns
back on Tuesday, March 13th in Lakewood, Colorado as the
Flower Mound native tied a single game league record with
three homeruns in a game to push her career total to 67
to surpass former Midwestern State All-American Katelyn
Vinson (2013-2016). Hardin is also on-pace to become the
league’s new leader in RBI as she sits just four behind former
teammate and two-time National Player of the Year Renee
Erwin (2012-2015).

Candace Abrams enters her first
season at the helm of the Lady Buffs
following three years as the program’s
top assistant.
Since arriving in Canyon, Abrams
has been a part of two Lone Star
Conference Championships as well as
a South Central Regional Title and trip
to the DII College World Series. Abrams
also serves as the staff advisor for the
“Hollerin Herd” and she was named the
2016 Advisor of the Year.
Abrams enters the 2018 season with
an overall career record of 202-65-1
(.754). The Tucson native registered her
100th career victory on May 9, 2015
in a 7-6 extra inning victory on Angelo
State during the NCAA South Central
Regional Tournament in Canyon. Her
200th career win came on May 5, 2017
as the Lady Buffs topped Cameron (7-6)
during the Semifinal Round of the LSC
Championship in San Angelo.
The Lady Buffs continued to prove
themselves as one of the top programs
in all of Division II Softball during the
2017 campaign as they claimed the
program’s fourth Lone Star Conference
Tournament Championship and hosted
the NCAA South Central Regional
Tournament for the fifth straight season.
The Lady Buffs hit .371 as a team with
120 doubles, 10 triples and 98 homeruns
to drive in 401 RBI for an incredible
slugging percentage of .667.
2016 was arguably one of the best
seasons in Lone Star Conference history
as the Lady Buffs finished the season
ranked fifth in the final NFCA DII Top-25
Poll with an overall record of 59-5 while
rolling thru the LSC with an incredible
mark of 30-2 to claim their third straight
conference title. The Lady Buffs started
out the season on a roll as they went
unbeaten in their first 30 contests to set
a new LSC and South Central Region
record for consecutive wins.
WT continued their dominance in
2015 as Abrams helped lead the Lady
Buffs to the program’s second straight
and third overall LSC Championship as
they finished the season 45-11 with a
22-6 mark in LSC play.
WT made national news during the
2015 season, remaining the top team
in the NFCA Division II Top-25 Poll for
a record 56-straight weeks (2/26/14
- 3/25/15). WT led the nation in four
offensive statustical categories during
the 2015 season while also hitting 102
homeruns to become the first team in
Division II history to reach the century
mark in back-to-back years.
Abrams came to Canyon in the
Summer of 2014 following a two year
stint as the head coach at Rocky
Mountain Athletic Conference member
Colorado Mesa. While at Mesa, she led
the Mavericks to the 2014 RMAC regular
season title with a 27-21 record while
finishing 2013 with an overall record of
28-17-1.
Abrams arrived in Grand Junction
following two years on the coaching
staff at University of Arizona. In 2012,
Abrams helped lead the Wildcats to the
NCAA Division I Super Regional title
game before bowing out to eventual
national runner-up, Oklahoma.
Prior to her arrival Arizona she spent
two years as assistant coach at NCAA
Division II Barry University, During her
tenure at Barry University she designed
and implemented drills for outfielders,
catchers and hitters while she

Lacey Taylor enters her second season as an Assistant Coach for the Lady Buffs after making the
transition from the field to the dugout in 2017 as the former Lady Buff All-American joined the WT
Softbal coaching staff. Taylor is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Sports Management from
West Texas A&M after graduating with her bachelor’s degree in Sports & Exercise Science in May
of 2016.
The Byers, Texas native was an instrumental part of WT’s continues success during her first
season on staff in 2017 as the Lady Buffs claimed the program’s fourth Lone Star Conference
Tournament Title and hosted the NCAA
South Central Regional Tournament for
the fifth straight season. The Lady Buffs hit
.371 as a team with 120 doubles, 10 triples
and 98 homeruns to drive in 401 RBI for an
incredible slugging percentage of .667.
Taylor became the fourth player in
program history to have her number honored on the outfield wall at
Schaeffer Park on Saturday, February 11th as her No. 23 joined Kim
LeComte (10), Alyssa Lemos (3) and Renee Erwin (34).
Taylor cemented herself as one of the top players to ever wear the
Maroon & White as she registered an overall record of 208-36 (.853)
during her career to become the winningest Lady Buff in history alongside
fellow four-year senior Brittany Gehle. Taylor led WT to an overall record
of 95-19 (.833) in Lone Star Conference play to claim three straight LSC
Titles along with a pair of LSC Tournament Titles.
The Lady Buffs turned Schaeffer Park into one of the best home
environments in the country as WT went an incredible 125-16 (.887) in
Canyon during Taylor’s career, leading all of Division II in attendance
in 2015 and 2016. WT hosted three NCAA South Central Regional
Tournaments and two South Central Super Regionals in which WT won
both and made a pair of appearances in the Division II College World
Series, winning the 2014 DII National Championship.
She finished her career with 214 appearances and 197 starts as she
registered a .362 batting average with 40 doubles, three triples and 30
homeruns to drive in 173 RBI for a slugging percentage of .619 while
walking 140
times for an on-base clip of .499. Behind the plate, she registered
the second highest fielding percentage in program history (.944) and
ranking fourth in putouts (775) with just five errors in four seasons.
