They’re now prevalent in our lives, helping us carry out tedious housework, distribute warehouse inventory, automate manufacturing, and research lunar landscapes. Until now, developing, testing, and deploying intelligent robotics applications was difficult and time consuming. We announced AWS RoboMaker, a new service that makes it easy for developers to develop, test, and deploy robotics applications, as well as build intelligent robotics functions using cloud services. We’ll invite our launch customer up for a demonstration – Robot Care Systems, a company that is enabling elderly and disabled people to live independently.

We presented Gimel at Dataworks Summit in San Jose. Gimel is the open source unified data API which enables connectivity to any data store with a single API. Along with the API which works with Scala and Python, we are also surfacing a SQL interface to access any data store with just SQL. Now data scientists and analysts can directly consume data from big data platforms like Kafka for real-time streaming data access or Elastic for search-related data all with SQL just like they can access Oracle or Teradata. On the other hand, data engineers can relax now with this abstracted API since it isolates the ever-changing world of big data infrastructure from their code. No longer do they need to worry about API versions, connector versions, data store-specific semantics, or compute engine and version. Due to this complex matrix of technologies and thousands of datasets, engineers spend considerable time learning about different data sources, formats, programming models, APIs, optimizations, etc. which impacts time-to-market (TTM). To solve this problem and to make product development more effective, PayPal Data Platform developed “Gimel”, a unified analytics data platform which provides access to any storage through a single unified data API and SQL, that is powered by a centralized data catalog. In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
