PRESENTATION NOTES: LEADERSHIP WITHOUT AUTHORITY: My role is to be a thought leader and help people, including Autodesk management, to see things from different perspectives, take the long view, think differently and develop solutions accordingly. I work by influencing others rather than by controlling them or making decisions for them I help people make smarter decisions, but THEY make the decisions, not me. Therefore please be clear that what you will hear in my presentation to you today are my views and are NOT to be considered as future announcements of Autodesk. today, I’m here to assist and influence you, and to help you make smarter decisions for your world, your organization and your job. these are the same things I am presenting to others at Autodesk and in organizations around the globe as I seek to help them to see things from different perspectives and points of view and to consider some new and different models for the way things will mostly likely be in the future. SPEED WARNING: I also tend to speak very quickly, and my rate of speech increases as I get more excited and passionate about what I’m talking about as you’ll soon see I am VERY excited and passionate about everything I do! for your sake, and especially the translators, I’ll do my best to control my speed of speech KEY WORDS: Disclaimer Warning speed advisor influence leadership authority and without authority decision making
PRESENTATION NOTES: Congratulations! You’ve just experienced a Pecha Kucha presentation! And one from Wayne no less! Strongly urge you to try it out by giving one yourself and setting up opportunities to use this model back in your organizations. Oh, you can breath now!
PRESENTATION NOTES: what I’m fairly good at is developing new perspectives and points of views that’s what I aim to do for you today; give you some new perspectives and points of view It has been said, (Alan Kay) that a new perspective is worth 80 IQ points and so I’m expecting to help raise you IQ today by providing you with a number of new perspectives. , I expect to make you much smarter when you leave! KEY WORDS: perspective point of view IQ points

PRESENTATION NOTES: not only is each snowflake unique when we combine a set of snowflakes together, we create yet another unique assembly such as a project team, a product, a building, a movie KEY WORDS: snow ball group collection assembly
PRESENTATION NOTES: BUT if this is SO true and has been for SO long then why do we live in a world that is designed for the opposite: sameness? most things are designed by starting with a “target audience” that is defined by a set of things they have in common and then we design products and services to match these common traits. but we just noted how everyone and every situation is unique yet here we are designing things as if we are all the same? After 100+ years, mass production has become a way of being, woven within our thinking, our cultures The conceptual shift of society from mass production to mass personalization Shift from sameness to uniqueness Embrace uniqueness to create competitive advantage KEY WORDS: obvious true human history opposite sameness consistency identical
PRESENTATION NOTES: mass production is no so much a characteristic of manufacturing. it has permeated our cultures, language, education, society this no longer fits or makes sense or works The transformation to the alternative of mass personalization and customization. KEY WORDS: Mass Production Mass personalization Uniqueness custom, customized, mass customization
PRESENTATION NOTES: this is the vision, the end state that I’m focused on; getting to Just Right Just the right ….. (build slide one line at a time) KEY WORDS: just right perfection opposite content person time context device
The crush of exponentially expanding abundance of “stuff” upon us. Paradox of choice Resolved by context based filtering
PRESENTATION NOTES: Let me talk to you a bit more about how I see this Snowflake Effect being implemented, how such an audacious and enormous vision is practical and possible. One of the other major patterns and trends I want to alert you to is that of MASHUPS the concept of what are now often referred to as “Mash ups” is one of the best examples of how the Snowflake Effect can be understood and implemented. to understand the power of mashups and how they are best understood as an overarching conceptual model, consider a Massive implementation of Lego blocks Individual components (blocks), based on standards (pin size) that can be snapped together to create anything ! This applies to software code, content, competencies, project teams… KEY WORDS: LEGO blocks standards pin sizes (on the Lego blocks) snap together fit together infinite assemblies Mashups
PRESENTATION NOTES: Uniqueness often comes from the whole, the assembly rather than the parts. Indeed in many cases (eg LEGO blocks) all the pieces are pre-existing (old) and very similar or standard, yet they can produce an infinite number of unique assemblies. Other examples might be music from the same small set of notes, all stories based on a common set of pre-existing words, etc.
