How do you implement a chat bot?
Hello to Jason
You just implement a chat bot!
What about social tools?
Can machine learning help us?
I don’t have enough data to answer that.
You don’t have enough likes for me to answer

Notas del editor

  1. I don’t like to start on a negative note, but how do these seven words make you feel…? [CLICK]
  2. Is it dread, guilt, how can I get away without doing this? Will it take me all morning? For some, their only experience of the Learning Management System… feels like punishment. And I think a lot of intranets treat the LMS, and practically any other learning, as something you go elsewhere for …so I want to argue that we can do a lot better, and not just for our intranet or our users, and I’ll share a few lessons I’ve had to learn.
  3. Thinking broadly about learning, it could mean anything where people learn something, put it to use, record it, or ANYTHING other than FORGET it. On the whole, I’m talking about the ecosystem around training materials, but far from exclusively LMSes. I'm not really going to talk about digital skills in the workplace. They're essential, and I hope teaching digital skills blends into the meta skills that support and reinforce the process of learning. So, why learning? Well, I think, it’s core to how organisations change… Thinking about the turnaround at Microsoft - Satya Nadella has described it as moving from a “know it all culture” to a “learn it all culture” I like this quote from John Hagel at Deloitte - Large Organizations need to shift from providing scalable efficiency to providing scalable learning” These, I see, are about building a culture where staff development goes beyond box ticking, to a point where the employees are informed, engaged, and collectively able to help the organisation sense and adjust to changes in the world. So, this is the project that got me thinking about learning…
  4. Sadly, I CAN’T NAME THE CLIENT, but I’m allowed to show these screenshots. In the simplest terms, we were building a front end to the LMS, with a broad range of new learning materials to contribute towards better leadership and change management. This is a topic page, and a bit bland, [CLICK] and this is an original format programme page. This evolved towards this Pinterest-style [CLICK] programme page with, naturally, the ability for users to to pin resources to a development board. [PAD Something clicked with this design, I like it because it makes your eyes and brain work, rather than scanning a list.] This is actually quite a short page…! [CLICK] More recently, we’ve rebuilt the system to be the foundation for more than 30 academies … with some 6,000 learning resources linked from more than 500 unique pages. Together, they attract 100,000 page views a month My role, has been to make this work in SharePoint, but a lot of others were involved, including: UX designers, content strategists and copywriters, a design agency, project and channels managers, a search specialist, learning specialists including curriculum experts, training professionals, training designers and others. And this is my first lesson… YOU CANNOT DO THIS ON YOUR OWN”
  5. "In eleven years of being the in-house person responsible for the intranet, this [CLICK] was the closest I’d really got to learning materials. This was the fourth generation of BDP’s Design Process, where users could explore the stages in different building design and procurement processes. After becoming a contractor, I was introduced to Virtual Learning Environments, or VLEs, in schools - this was a concept teacher dashboard. Then came the contract that really got me thinking about learning - I CAN’T NAME THE CLIENT, but I can share these screenshots. In the simplest terms, we were building a front end to the LMS, but with curated learning materials to contribute towards better leadership. Over time, the platform evolved with simpler journeys through the site, this, the Pinterest-style collation and, naturally, the ability to pin resources to a user’s development board. In the three years since winning an Intranet Innovation Award, it's been rebuilt as the foundation for more than 30 academies ... between them, they get around 100,000 page views a month, and there are about 6,000 learning resources linked from more than 500 unique programme pages. My role, was making that work in SharePoint 2010, but a lot of others were involved, including: UX designers, content strategists and copywriters, a design agency, project and channels managers, a search specialist, learning specialists including curriculum experts, training professionals, training designers and others. This brings me to lesson 1… YOU CANNOT DO THIS ON YOUR OWN"
  6. But you can do a lot, and this is why I think this is the first step. [CLICK] Start engaging the people involved in training, [CLICK] and start investigating their pain points [CLICK] This isn’t the time for big changes, but you might find your intranet manager superpowers of governance, content design and interaction design will be able to make a difference, especially [CLICK] as you find broader themes and commonalities [CLICK] And this might be to use your intranet as a shop window... so let’s move onto communications and front page news...
  7. [CLICK] A new course feels a little dull and worthy … but like any news, make it relevant and give it a point [CLICK] Does it fill a gap in company knowledge? Or perhaps indicate where the business is going? [CLICK] How does it make a difference to customers? Celebrate successes that come out of training, or look for training in good news stories… [CLICK] Is there something that is driven by employees themselves? [CLICK] What does it say that the organisation is committing to…for example, standards in the industry [CLICK] Does it create new career opportunities? Could I get paid more if I do this? Use training as a lens to show the organisation as it might be But there can be a lot of it, and… learning is a personal thing and it scales badly. You need to start thinking about curation…
  8. Use your experts to design better starting points, use your understanding of users and their needs to turn them into something of value. [CLICK] This structure was at the heart of the curriculum project: creating something coherent and understandable, and great for exploring. [CLICK] But, perhaps, you might look at “learning journeys” to provide expert guidance to users. It could be a simple sequence, or something of a decision tree, or something based on a questionnaire, or organisation structure. Then, there are simpler ways, perhaps with information that already exists. [CLICK] This is a “Workshop finder” that connects people with potential courses Last on this page, and I’m including it here because it needs professional intervention, and that’s [CLICK] search. We had someone to focus on search and analytics, and I think he achieved a lot through the usual iterative techniques [PAD: through… Analysing search terms and behaviour…Improving the metadata...changing page content and priority...best bets...landing pages to disambiguate more awkward terms.] It would be great if your learning materials and pages can be included in the overall intranet search, but that can be hard work with potential risks if you have too much. Some people prefer not to search, but will go straight to a chatbot to ask for potential courses. So, what’s a chatbot to do? Might it perform a search? Might it, as I suspect, come back to curation? So, should we embrace new technology? Yes, carefully…
  9. A chatbot has great potential for access to learning, but it takes effort to get simple language, like taking time off, right. So, what will it take to handle the subtleties around hundreds of training programmes? [CLICK] Machine learning has wonderful potential, and is getting easier to implement, but there's a lot to get wrong. [CLICK] Social tools not only offer new connections and support for learners, but there’s valuable feedback in the data generated by likes, ratings and reviews.[CLICK] Gamification doesn't convince me, but Vodafone in Ukraine (REF TO JAMES) said they've had a lot of success engaging call-centre workers with gamified training. [PAD Onboarding portals, that help new employees become familiar with the organisation and their new colleagues, are showing real value and may have lessons for training throughout the company…] The real value in technology, is in blending everything into simpler interfaces with greater consistency, and no hassle of multiple logins or single sign-on. They might support you with notes or revision questions. Or they might ease you from learning in a safe sandbox to your new working environment. And I haven't even got around to video, virtual reality, or augmented reality. Whatever you think about technology, we see one lesson time and time again, you need to understand the people it’s going to affect. [Like intranets, Learning is about people]
  10. [Like intranets, Learning is about people] Know your people, and commit to research, and there’s nothing like sitting in a user lab, silently screaming, while watching someone completely misunderstand your carefully designed work. Nothing quite concentrates the mind like it, and it gave us the kick we needed. Another piece of research, into how employees use learning, yielded an important lesson that… the biggest impediment to learning (particularly in branches) was not technology, but the attitudes of managers. [CLICK] And this managerial friction, can get worse as you go up the organisation, senior stakeholders struggle to grasp technology, but made worse if they don't understand learning in a digital environment. But I think this illustrates why intranet people should be involved with learning - we value user experience design - we understand the importance of content and its lifecycles - intranet people have real experience of digital content governance - we're the kind of people who thrive on working inside the organisation
  11. So, why learning? I hope I’ve persuaded you there is real value in thinking more about learning, and to, perhaps, start with a few small steps. [CLICK] So, make this a chance to invest in your organisation’s future And put the intranet at the centre.
