The appendix is a small pouch connected to the large intestine in humans and other primates. While it once had a purpose, the appendix is now considered a vestigial organ with no known function in the modern human. Removal of a diseased or ruptured appendix through appendectomy is a common surgery to prevent further complications from appendicitis.
