The Problem statement
• Funding landscape in Tshwane is fundamentally
  different to JHB
• Donor sector is smaller, and have different dynamics
• NGO sector is much less robust and on the cutting edge
  of CSI trends
• Geo political environment is fragmented and lack of
  coordination leaves areas under serviced and not a
  part of the political agenda of the city
• Mass expansion of the city limits brings opportunity
  but also possible pressure on already thinly spread
  resources

     Annual contribution to charity?, Area of support?,
     What is the minimum number of beneficiaries you
     usually look for?

     Funders’ perceptions of general funding landscape in

Steps:
• Identify business hubs in Tshwane
• Drive around listing companies and marking them on a map
  (teamwork)
• Back to the office – GOOGLE companies looking for those with
  CSI budgets
• Attempt to set up interviews
• Interview in person or via email
• Collate and analyse the data with Thematic content analysis
• Interpret results
• Compile report

Mechanics of the SCI space ship
•    Show and prove impact & progress on deliverables agreed upon
•    MER is an essential requirement which should reflect quality and quantity
•    Financial tracking and reporting of any concerns in advance is expected and
     should be of a high standard
•    Endorsements and other funders are important as a criteria of selection
•    Marketing should give the donor the expected returns in exposure but they are
     allergic to negative press – you must make them look good
•    Clear and honest communication is best – relationship with funder is NB
•    Opportunities for company engagement helps strengthen the donors emotional
     ties with the organisation
•    Collaboration would help the donors to make sense of the needs of the
     community and will level out frustrations with dealing with so many hands that
     want
•    Sustainability - donors don’t want to support you forever they want to see the
     end of the tunnel from the beginning
•    Empowering community participation and community ownership is still important
     aspects for donors in considering applications

NGO perceptions
• Ignorance regarding the “new” opportunities regarding
  funding in the CSI/CSR arena
• Struggle for financial sustainability
• Donors who did have CSI/ CSR donor requirements
  seemed to have accelerated system development
• But it is a make or break scenario if you cant comply
  with expectations
• General NGO sector lagged behind recent
  developments in the funding field
• Government dependency still prevalent

• Capacity shortages and ignorance will leave
  many pigs in the field
• The transformation of NGO to flying pig will
  separate those who can and who can’t meet
  donor requirements
• For now it seems that each piggy is guarding
  their treasure map very closely

  help

• Continuously work on the organisations investment
  readiness and investment attractiveness
• Collaborate- too many pigs confuse and frustrate
  donors, find ways to partner
• How you market matters, success attracts success
• Figure out what sustainability means for your own
  organisation and work within this framework
• Find ways to make local government relevant to what
  you do- some politics may be needed
• Connect up with local businesses

The Problem statement • Funding landscape in Tshwane is fundamentally different to JHB • Donor sector is smaller, and have different dynamics • NGO sector is much less robust and on the cutting edge of CSI trends • Geo political environment is fragmented and lack of coordination leaves areas under serviced and not a part of the political agenda of the city • Mass expansion of the city limits brings opportunity but also possible pressure on already thinly spread resources

The Questionnaire Divided into: • Quantitative Level of involvement?, Sector description?, Annual contribution to charity?, Area of support?, What is the minimum number of beneficiaries you usually look for? • Qualitative Funders’ perceptions of general funding landscape in Tshwane and funders’ own priorities regarding funding

Mechanics of the SCI space ship • Show and prove impact & progress on deliverables agreed upon • MER is an essential requirement which should reflect quality and quantity • Financial tracking and reporting of any concerns in advance is expected and should be of a high standard • Endorsements and other funders are important as a criteria of selection • Marketing should give the donor the expected returns in exposure but they are allergic to negative press – you must make them look good • Clear and honest communication is best – relationship with funder is NB • Opportunities for company engagement helps strengthen the donors emotional ties with the organisation • Collaboration would help the donors to make sense of the needs of the community and will level out frustrations with dealing with so many hands that want • Sustainability - donors don’t want to support you forever they want to see the end of the tunnel from the beginning • Empowering community participation and community ownership is still important aspects for donors in considering applications

NGO perceptions • Ignorance regarding the “new” opportunities regarding funding in the CSI/CSR arena • Struggle for financial sustainability • Donors who did have CSI/ CSR donor requirements seemed to have accelerated system development • But it is a make or break scenario if you cant comply with expectations • General NGO sector lagged behind recent developments in the funding field • Government dependency still prevalent

Finding the treasure map • Capacity shortages and ignorance will leave many pigs in the field • The transformation of NGO to flying pig will separate those who can and who can’t meet donor requirements • For now it seems that each piggy is guarding their treasure map very closely • Taking great snappies with the donor always help

The Highway to success II • Continuously work on the organisations investment readiness and investment attractiveness • Collaborate- too many pigs confuse and frustrate donors, find ways to partner • How you market matters, success attracts success • Figure out what sustainability means for your own organisation and work within this framework • Find ways to make local government relevant to what you do- some politics may be needed • Connect up with local businesses
