2. WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?
Turkey is an amazing mixture of exotic influences as it combines influences from the
Middle East and the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Central Asia.
It is a richly historical land which has hosted some of the biggest names in history
including Julius Caesar, when Turkey belonged to the Roman Empire, to St Paul
crisscrossing across the country. Churches coexist with mosques, roman theatres and
Hittite cities crumble alongside each other, and beach resorts line the coasts.
The diversity in the countries geography will memorise first time visitors from the
Aegean beaches to the eastern mountains. Istanbul is metropolis whereas the eastern
regions are less visited and still maintain the traditional charm of the relics found there.
The south-western coasts offer plentiful activities including trekking, horse-riding and
water sports.
Embrace Turkey’s diversity with the range of different things to see and do in the
country: hot-air ballooning over Cappadocia; visiting Ishak Pasa Sarayi, one of eastern
Turkey’s most emblematic sites; Nemrut Dagi is an extraordinary mountain-top temple-
tomb; and much more.
3. ATTRACTIONS
We’ve selected our top 3 things to see and do in Turkey:
Istanbul: The largest city in Turkey, Istanbul is the country’s economic, cultural and
historical heart. Be dazzled by the Blue Mosque while taking a tour, there’s around
20,000 shimmering tiles – we dare you to try and count them all… Aya Sofya was
commissioned by the Byzantine emperor and has been a church, mosque and is
currently a museum!
Antalya: The city on the Mediterranean coast is Turkey’s biggest international sea
resort. Don’t miss out on the Antalya Museum with its extensive exhibitions ranging
from the Stone Age to the Byzantium. Experience the 700 year old Balik Pazari
Hamami which offers Turkish bath packages. Nicknamed the gateway to the Turkish
Rivera, you can take advantage of Antalya’s location and go on a variety of boat trips
and tours to discover more of Turkey.
Marmaris: A port town and popular tourist resort with beautiful coastline and delicious
local wines, Marmaris is famed for its nightlife including Shooters R&B Club. Marmaris’
hilltop castle hosts Marmaris Museum which exhibits tombstones and oil lamps. Visit
the Marmaris Diving Centre where you can rent out equipment and spend a day diving.
4. WEATHER
As Turkey is located predominately in western Asia but overlaps into south-eastern
Europe, it has a temperate Mediterranean climate with a hot and dry summer and a
cold winter. The coastal seas of Turkey bordering the Black Sea have a temperate
Oceanic climate and this area receives the most rainfall throughout the year.
Summer has an average high temperature of 30°C. Northern Turkey in particular
remains moderately hot with regions having average temperatures of around 28°C.
Winter in the north-west regions comes in late December and lasts till March. Some
parts of Turkey can even get snow on the coastal regions of the Sea of Maramara. The
snow can remain at least 120 days of the year.

5. CLOTHING
Overall Turkey is a conservative country concerning dress due to its
Islamic faith, so beachwear should be confined to the beach and
revealing clothing should be kept to a minimum for respect of the
culture. If you are planning on visiting a mosque, ensure that your
knees, shoulders and chest are covered up and women have to cover
their head.
6. IDEAL FOR…?
Turkey is an ideal holiday destination for families who
are looking for a fun beach holiday in the sun with lots
of activities to do for the kids. You can splash out on
all-inclusive hotels or on go holiday relatively cheaply.
There are plenty of cities away from the coast that
provide plenty of cultural excursions into the country’s
history.
