uhair Murad says he did not
choose to work in fashion and
that it was fashion that chose
him. When he was a young boy
he remembers that he used to
spend a lot of time drawing and playing with
different colours. While he says he cannot
remember at what age he started drawing, he
recalls his mother telling him that even from
the age of 3 he would spend hours in his room
drawing.
At the age of 10 he started accompanying
his mother to her appointments with her
dressmakers. “She used to take me with her all
the time for her fittings and it is was there that
I saw how the couturiers measured and fitted
the dresses, how they cut, it was when couture
was more common, now everyone wears
ready-to-wear pieces, but at the time many
women used to get their wardrobes tailor-
made. My mum would buy the fabrics and get
everything designed. I was fascinated by the
fabrics and the colours”. And it was then that it
all started for him.
“It was difficult to begin,
difficult to organise fashion
shows, to launch my
own couture house,” the
designer says about starting out
in Beirut. “In the beginning I started with
smaller collections and worked with photos
and lookbooks, then slowly began organising
fashion shows.” His first collection was “galaxy
inspired, with horoscopes and the Milky Way,
space, the stars, the moon, a little bit futuristic.
I mixed classic couture with something new.
The reaction was very positive and the show
was very successful.” Though after his first
show he quickly realised he had to be in Paris
to further his career. “My place is in Paris, to
be with the huge couturiers.” And now the
internationally renowned fashion designer has
found his place in the coveted Paris Fashion
Week calendar, and shows his collections every
season in the French capital.
“I am always inspired by nature and history,
Zuhair Murad
DesignsB Y S A N D R A I S K A N D E R
Zuhair Murad has dressed some of the
most beautiful and stylish women in
the world, including Kate Hudson,
Jennifer Lopez and Kate Beckinsale
and his star continues to shine and
dazzle in the fashion world. Based
between Beirut, Paris and Milan,
the Lebanese designer is constantly travelling, and
while in Paris for fashion week recently, Where took
the opportunity to sit with the talented couturier
and talk about his new collection and how it all
started for him in fashion.
12. 12 WHERE PARIS I JULY 2014
[ I N T E R V I E W ]
I find nature is very beautiful and a source of
inspiration for me. I design with love, there is
excitement in finding a new idea and creating
a new collection, it feeds my imagination to
work on a new collection, to invent and create
a new theme. It energises me. For me, it is my
world to create something new or to find new
fabrics.”
For the designer’s Spring/Summer 2014
Couture collection he explains that he
“imagined a very happy, romantic woman. I
imagined the Garden of Eden, with different
coloured flowers but also abstract animal print.
Leopard print and panther, zebra and tiger,
mixed in with the flowers and transformed
into pastel colours. Fairy-like, serenity, a mix
of flowers and animals, it is a fauna and flora
theme. I wanted something soft for summer,
a sense of energy, positivity. I imagined a
woman full of life, beautiful. For me a woman
is like a flower. I mixed the beauty of a woman
and the beauty of a flower together.” the
result is a powerful collection with a mixture
of femininity and sexiness with the closing
piece, the wedding dress, featuring 25,000
flowers, bringing together the image Murad
had with his
extraordinary
talent of
exquisite design
and intricate
detailing.
Meanwhile,
for his ready-to-
wear collection
he explains, “the
theme was insect
inspired, with a lot of butterflies. I find that
butterflies and their form with their wings
and the details and images on the wings
are beautiful, the mix of colours, the print,
are extraordinary. The cut of the dresses, the
sleeves, the cap sleeves, were all inspired
by the butterfly, in abstract form.” Working
with a lot of leather, jersey and lace that
was specifically made for the collection, the
ready-to-wear pieces create a natural link with
the pieces from the couture collection, with
feminine and sultry shapes, strong yet dainty,
embodying the Zuhair Murad woman. “To me
the Zuhair Murad woman is very confident,
with a strong personality, intelligent, beautiful,
sensual, seductive. A modern woman,
a woman who appreciates couture
and handmade items. She’s young,
she loves life and enjoys the good
things in life. My first inspiration is
the woman. I like a woman who
is glamorous, sensual, confident,
audacious but timid at the
same time, to have that
contrast in her
personality, that’s
the woman of Zuhair Murad. She is Lebanese,
Russian, French. She must have a presence.”
When it comes to the other well-known
fashion houses, Murad admires Alexander
McQueen, Valentino and Tom Ford.
Considering them more of an inspiration
rather than competition, he says, “Everything
beautiful could be considered my
competition. When I see a beautiful collection
it motivates me to be better, to work harder
and to create something new and different. I
enjoy competition. I find it is the best thing for
me to feel pushed to work even harder.” And
what is his biggest reward? “An extraordinary
feeling is when I see a star wearing my clothes
13. on the red carpet at the Oscars and Golden
Globes for example. It’s touching when they
choose to wear my clothes. It is like I won an
award when I see someone wear my clothes, it’s
like someone telling me ‘continue doing what you
are doing, you’re doing well and continue doing
what you’re doing’.”
And continuing with his talented designed is
exactly what the designer is doing. “When people
think Zuhair Murad, they automatically think
couture, expensive dresses and it is what I want to
continue doing. Even the ready-to-wear collections
are on the higher end of the spectrum. The
majority of my clients are young women who love
fashion. The fashion house is very popular with the
younger generation as the dresses always feature
a little bit of rock and has a young feel with the
cuts and fabrics. Our clientele is getting younger
and younger and I find that amazing because I
am always inspired by young women. Even our
older clientele wants to look younger, so it’s
great.”

mong the timepieces from the
luxury watch and jewellery firm
Chopard was the intriguingly
beautiful Happy Sport Tourbillon
high jewellery watch set entirely
with diamonds housing a L.U.C.
tourbillon movement produced by the Chopard
manufacture. Available in white or pink gold,
the watch draws on the savoir-faire of the arts
and crafts that are all part of the equation in the
fashioning of high fashion watches.
Baselworld offered the opportunity for
the house of de Grisogono to present its
Allegra watch, named for the daughter of
the company’s founder and designer Fawaz
Gruosi. The Allegra collection all began over a
decade ago with rings, earrings and bracelets
and the watch offers a continuation of the
house’s fabulous aesthetics. Square-shaped, it
features intertwining links and a riot of precious
gemstones forming a jewel that tells time.
Beauty and style come forth from the house
of Dior whose Mini D is set with diamonds and
sports a handsome dial in black mother-of-
pearl. Its strap is shiny and mirror-like in goatskin
leather of a yellow gold colour that can be
swapped for an extra strap in black patent calf.
The 19mm watch with its hour-minute quartz
movement, encased in stainless steel and whose
bezel and crown are set with diamonds, is water-
resistant to up to 30 metres.
Basel was also the stage for Blancpain to
reveal its Villeret 12-Day Flying Tourbillon whose
movement, like all of Blancpain’s movements,
was developed in the house’s watch-making
workshop. The elegant watch, with an
exceptional 12-day power reserve, has bridges
and a power reserve disc that are entirely
decorated with a hand-guilloché
motif, a meticulous ancestral skill.
Meanwhile, precision and a
highly complex mechanism
are all on the agenda for
Girard-Perregaux with its
Tri-Axial Tourbillon, a watch limited to 10 pieces.
The house is a historic specialist in the mastery
of this precision watch mechanism and this
high-speed tourbillon on three separate axes
is a new step in chronometric perfection in a
case of pink gold. This development embodies
the quintessence of time measurement based
on the physical principle of the elimination
of disturbances, the first being the Earth’s
gravitational pull.
From Hermès comes a very Parisian style
and elegance perfected in miniature with the
delicate Faubourg watch available in rose, white
or yellow gold and also available in rose, white or
yellow gold set in diamonds. Its white lacquered
dial is set with a diamond at 12 o’clock and its
bracelet is in gold, leather or satin depending on
the model.
Skeletons are always striking and Hublot’s
classic fusion skull is no exception. It’s sleek
and contemporary and replete with the
manufacture’s famous manual winding skeleton
tourbillon movement, which for this piece
has seen several transformations. Of note,
the bridges and plate have undergone 3-D
machining, a very delicate process that has
imparted upon the watch
a 3-D look, rare in watch-
making as the bridges are
generally flat. The watch has
been brought out in a limited
edition of 50 pieces.

Rolex’s Oyster Datejust Pearlmaster 34
Rolex is introducing new gem-set versions
of the Oyster Datejust Pearlmaster 34 in 18ct
yellow, white and Everose gold versions
combining mastery in gem-setting with the
pinnacle of watch-making. The dials of these
34mm masterpieces are paved with gemstones
with the bezel adorned with baguette-cut blue
sapphires on the white gold version while the
yellow gold version sports baguette-cut pink
sapphires. The version in 18ct Everose gold, an
exclusive pink gold alloy created by Rolex in its
own foundry, offers a splendid bezel of brilliant
cut diamonds.
Zenith is reaching for stars in the sky with its El
Primero 410, combining the performance of the
world’s most accurate automatic chronograph
with triple calendar and dreamy moon phase
indications. Perpetuated over the years since the
calibre 410 was created in 1969 as a variation of
the house’s legendary El Primero, the new take
on the icon is out in a 500-piece limited edition
series featuring a slate grey dial.
Meanwhile, at the Salon International de
la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva, Richard
Mille brought out its spectacular Tourbillon RM
19-01 Natalie Portman. This piece is limited to
20 pieces in a white or red gold gem-set case.
The manual winding tourbillon movement with
hours, minutes and power reserve indicator
marks the house’s first collaboration with
American actress Natalie Portman and the watch
exudes complex undertones like its diamond-
studded tracery based upon the image of the
spider.
The SIHH was the setting for A. Lange & Söhne
to put forth its two new Saxonia models offering
a combination of precision and feminine
elegance. Fashioned in grey gold, the watch dial
is available in brown or a stylish white nestled in
a setting of 60 brilliant-cut diamonds. Founded
in Dresden in 1845, A. Lange & Söhne, produces
only a few thousand wristwatches each year.
Vacheron Constantin brought out its
spectacular Malte tourbillon openworked, a
Hallmark of Geneva certified timepiece, whose
fashioning called upon the well-honed skills
of master craftsmen. Inside the watch is the
house’s new Calibre 2790 SQ, whose conception,
modelling and design took 500 hours to achieve
the perfect balance between the tourbillon
mechanism and the transparent open worked
aesthetic. Interplay of light and shadow emerges
depending upon the angle from which the
watch is viewed.
This year Baume & Mercier enriched its Clifton
collection with five elegant pieces with a diameter
of 30mm perfect for dainty wrists. Silver-toned or
bi-coloured watch faces or one of mother-of-pearl
set in diamonds are among the highlights of the
new models. The mother-of-pearl version works
for both the office and an evening out in polished
satin steel with a chain bracelet. The watch is
a fine piece of horology with its mechanical
movement visible through the back case.
From the house of Piaget, which is celebrating
its 140th anniversary this year, emerged the
Altiplano 38mm 900P, the world’s thinnest
mechanical watch. Watchmakers, case
constructors and designers joined forces at each
stage of development, production, adjustment
and finishing to create this marvel of slenderness.
The jewellery version of the watch set with
diamonds is the world’s thinnest high jewellery
watch.
In the mood for a one of a kind piece, F.P.
Journe’s Elégante with a spectacular translucent
jade dial allows for the mechanics of the
movement to be viewed. It is a unique model
in the house’s first collection for women and
was fashioned in commemoration of the 5Oth
anniversary of diplomatic relations between
France and China.

he Bucherer story all began back
in 1888 when Carl F. Bucherer
and his wife Luise opened a
store dedicated to watches and
jewellery in Lucerne, Switzerland,
a charming city of turrets and
spires, cobblestone streets and fountains
tucked away on the luxuriant shores of Lake
Lucerne. Since its founding, the house has
enjoyed a rich journey, and through the years
has become an inherent part of the European
luxury landscape. Bucherer has been a family-
owned business for three generations now
and remains one today, a rarity in the world
of watch-making. The family flame passed to
the third generation in 1977 and the current
President of the group is Jörg G. Bucherer.
Today, Bucherer also offers a high-end watch
shopping experience in the Parisian capital
complemented by an exceptional selection of
jewellery. This luxurious and dazzling universe
awaits discovery in a historic monument
in the city’s elegant Opera-Place Vendôme
neighbourhood. The store carries an extensive
range of different items and Bucherer has
developed an exclusive interior design concept
with shops-in-a shop, enabling customers to
discover each brand’s unique universe.
The three-storey boutique features an
exceptional selection of jewellery and watches
from the finest of brands and the experience
provides a fine opportunity to discover
Bucherer’s own creations among them fine
timepieces for men and women some of which
exist in only limited editions, like the Alacria
RoyalRose and the Manero Tourbillon.
The rose has through the centuries been
regarded as a divine phenomenon, praised
by poets, a symbol of beauty and love. Carl F.
Bucherer has created a timepiece emanating
a special radiance, the Alacria RoyalRose,
a delightful, high jewellery timepiece that
skilfully combines elegance and symbolism.
A wreath of flowers enabling the watch
to project time in full bloom encircles its
spectacular white gold dial. The dial is
astonishing in mother of pearl covered in
relief- like floral elements while the blossoms
are set with 89 sapphires and 26 diamonds.
This stunning watch is limited to 125 pieces.
The tourbillon is regarded as the highest

revealing the complex mechanism in all of its
splendour. A nice feature of this hand-wound
watch in rose gold is its robust 70-hour power

Paris Spa
The chateau-like Saint James Paris hotel recently opened its new spa, in
collaboration with French luxury house Guerlain. The signature treatment here
is the Dédicace Guerlain, which was created by Guerlain especially for the spa.
It is a relaxing combination of a body massage and facial. Using the brand’s
luxurious products, your skin is left feeling hydrated, thanks to the nourishing
body oil used during the treatment, and any tension you may have felt before
your massage is gone and forgotten thanks to the effective pressure of the
masseuse. The treatment ends with the signature 19-minute Guerlain facial,
which leaves you with a magnificent glow. After your treatment you are invited
to enjoy a drink at the hotel’s bar to continue your moment of pure relaxation.
