Mass Vs Niche
Audience
By Will Smith, Josh O’Reilly, Tom Aquilina
and Ollie Murray
n A mass audience is those who consume the
mainstream or popular films, for example
Avengers. A mass audience is made up of a
very large group of people (women, men
children and adults).
n A niche audience is a much smaller audience
but very influential. A niche audience is a small
but select group of with a very unique interest.
n Most horror films have niche audiences. this is
because horror films are suited to a specific
type of audience and may not be enjoyed by
such a wide variety of people.for example, you
are unlikely to find a group of OAP’s rocking out
to the conjuring.

n An example of this is the purge. This film is
targeted at a young(from14-25) audience. It is
also very action packed meaning it would
appeal more to the male audience.
Ghost and spirits
n An example of this would be The Grudge which is
aimed at 15-35 year olds. This film and sub genre has
a fair amount of action within the film which means it
is aimed at 65% men and 35% female.
Slasher
n An example of this would be Friday the 13th
which is aimed at 15-24 year olds. In this film
there is a lot of violence and blood which
means it is mainly aimed at a male audience
but is still has a target audience of 30% female.
