Melanomas are malignant tumors derived from melanocytes. The most common site of involvement is the skin, although occasionally primary melanoma develops in other organs (eye, oral and nasal mucosa, vulval and anorectal mucosa, other gastrointestinal mucosa and the central nervous system (CNS)). Melanomas are a major cause of premature death from cancer. Recognized risk factors include personal or family history of melanoma, large numbers of naevi and/or dysplastic naevi, giant congenital melanocytic naevi, fair complexion, a tendency to sunburn, solar-damaged skin, a history of non-melanoma skin cancer, and immunodeficiency. The most common sites for melanoma are the legs of women and the backs of men, despite these not being the sites of greatest sun exposure. Early detection is associated with improved survival Any malignancy will grow, grow irregularly, and function abnormally. Melanomas produce pigment in varying amounts and may elicit an immune response that will be reflected in the clinical appearance. Some melanomas may lack pigment. A small but significant number of melanomas are undiagnosable clinically.

DEVELOPMENTAL DISTURBANCES OF GINGIVA 1) Fibromatosis Gingivae(Elephantiasis gingivae, hereditary gingival fibromatosis, congenital macrogingivae) Fibromatosis gingivae is a diffuse fibrous overgrowth of the gingival tissues. This condition is manifested as a dense, diffuse, smooth, or nodular overgrowth of the gingival tissues of one or both arches, usually appearing about the time of eruption of the permanent incisors. Even seen in very young children It is not painful and shows no tendency for hemorrhage. The extent of the tissue overgrowth may be such that the crowns of the teeth are nearly hidden even though they are fully erupted with respect to the alveolar bone . 2) Retrocuspid Papilla It is a small, elevated nodule located on the lingual mucosa of the mandibular cuspids. Clinical Features This soft, well-circumscribed, sessile, mucosal nodule, commonly bilateral, is located lingual to the mandibular cuspid, between the free gingival margin and the mucogingival junction. It is exceedingly common in children. Found a greater occurrence bilaterally than unilaterally. The structure appears as an elevated mucosal tag often showing mild hyperorthokeratosis or hyperparakeratosis, with or without acanthosis. The underlying connective tissue is sometimes highly vascularized and may exhibit large stellate fibroblasts as well as occasional epithelial rests. Because of its frequency of occurrence, the retrocuspid papilla is often considered to be a ‘normal’ anatomic structure which regresses with age and requires no treatment.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor that may occur anywhere within the oral cavity. It is locally invasive, infrequently metastasizes to ipsilateral regional lymph nodes, and rarely spreads to distant sites. Risk increases dramatically when alcohol use exceeds 6 oz of distilled liquor, 15 oz of wine, or 36 oz of beer/day. The combination of heavy smoking and alcohol abuse is estimated to raise the risk 100-fold in women and 38-fold in men. Purpose: The purpose of this webinar is to help participants learn how to prevent oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is a very fast-growing type of cancer. It is a form of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Signs and symptoms may differ depending on the form of BL and the organs or body systems involved. When it spreads, weakness and fatigue often develop. Lymphoma cells may build up in the lymph nodes and other organs, causing swelling. Central nervous system involvement is possible with all forms of BL, particularly when there is advanced-stage disease. The exact cause of BL is not known. EBV infection appears to play a role in some cases. While acquired (not inherited) genetic changes involving the MYC gene and other genes are present within BL cancer cells, it is unclear what causes these genetic changes to occur.
