There are roughly 285 million people suffering from visual impairment worldwide. This device is designed to aid those with low vision, especially people who lost their vision during early age. The multi-sensor assistive glasses developed transfers visual information from a camera into auditory signals to help blind users acquire spatial details of their environment and better navigate. The glasses contain a camera and sensors while a portable signal processor is carried separately. Visually impaired people can utilize the sensors through self-learning to substitute for human eyes.

Multi-Sensor-Dependent Blind Assistive Glasses
Introduction:
There are roughly 285 million people suffering visual impairment worldwide, and 3.9% of them carry it from birth. This device is designed to aid
those with low vision and is especially focused on people that lost their vision during early age. The technology we developed transfers visual
information into auditory signals for the blind to acquire spatial details of a environment. Such multi-sensor correlation device enables them to
better navigate and perform daily work. Users will wear a glasses-shaped device with camera and information detectors embedded while
portable signal processor(NI myRIO) is carried in their pack. Visual impairment people are expected to wear this device constantly so they can
utilize those sensors via brain self-learning process as a substitution of human eyes.

Compass + Accelerometer (embedded in myRio)
Obtain the orientation and acceleration information.
○ Calculate the angle between the true north
and current direction to realize navigation.
Webcam
Acquire image at 5 seconds
per frame with 160x120 pixels.
○ Edge pixel information is
transferred to different
sound frequency.
Ultrasonic Range Finder
Measure the distance between the
object and the user.
○ Distance information is codified
to control sound volume.
NI myRIO
Real time process image and data from sensors.
○ Generate sound on the FPGA
(A field-programmable gate array).
