I consider myself lucky to have been born in a country like India where almost every 100 kms on the road the language, the food, the clothes and sometimes even the entire geography changes. This country is a traveler’s delight and is perfect for those extraordinary weekend getaways.

1. Celebrate India – Bikaner Camel Festival with Yatra.com
What constitutes a traveler’s perfect weekend getaway? Let me enlighten you. It is usually a
new destination with even newer customs & traditions. It’s full of interesting strangers and
offers a handful of unique local activities to pass the time. Distinct local clothing and food works
like icing on the cake.
I consider myself lucky to have been born in a country like India where almost every 100 kms on
the road the language, the food, the clothes and sometimes even the entire geography
changes. This country is a traveler’s delight and is perfect for those extraordinary weekend
getaways.
Bikaner in Rajasthan is one such destination that offers all the
above mentioned ingredients and the best time to visit it is
during the Bikaner Camel Festival. Winters are the perfect
time to visit this place. As an added bonus all of you who have
craved that camel ride since your childhood but never got
one, this is your chance to get one in its most authentic form
at the best possible location. My experience of enjoying a ride
on the ‘Ship of the Desert’ at the desert itself is something I
just can’t explain in words! But, as you all know, I love to
relive my travelling moments, this one weekend I would
surely like to narrate!
Since the name itself mentions camels, let me start by telling you that I have personally never
ever seen Camels decked up so richly and royally in my entire life. Their bejeweled necks,
jingling anklets, bridles and several other pieces of decoration make them look like moving
works of art. On top of that, I got to see them dance………. Actually DANCE! Can you believe
that? Even I didn’t i.e. until I saw it with my own eyes. These are highly trained camels who
display amazing footwork at the slightest direction of their trainers. DO NOT MISS. Period!
Apart from dancing camels, I also had the opportunity to witness some Best camel breed
and Tug-of-war competitions along with some cultural performances which included acrobatics,
folk dance (swirling-skirt dance), and fire dance and last but not the least the amazing fireworks
display at the end of the festival.
Another interesting, in fact the most interesting thing about Bikaner is that it is also known as
the Fort city of India. It has a number of well-maintained historical forts that make Bikaner such
2. a tourist magnet. Its most popular fort, The Junagarh Fort is also used as the backdrop for the
entire festival and this is where the festival commences. There are many other popular forts
and palaces which house a number of historical temples and museums that offer an in-depth
knowledge of their culture and history. Sadly, since I had only a weekend I couldn’t see all the
structures but god willing, next time I surely will. However, if you can be there for a little longer
than just a weekend, believe me you’ll not regret it.
It’s getting late in the night and I have got to go to sleep but before I do I’ll just like to end by
mentioning that Rajasthan is bound to appear on almost everyone’s vacation destination list
sooner or later. So, if ever you decide to go there any time in the future, take my word for it
that this festival will be the perfect time because during these two days, the city of Bikaner is at
its prime and the Rajasthan experience is available at its most authentic.
This is Joy signing off,
Happy Travel to you all,
Good night.
