3. Cimitirul vesel
• It is probably the most famous
tourist attraction on our list of
the best must-see attractions in
Maramures.
• Unlike most cemeteries in the
world, the Merry Cemetery in
Săpânta has an unique
approach to death, seeing it
as a celebration of a life that
has ended rather than a tragic
event.
• On the cross there is also a
painting, meant to illustrate a
personality trait or a significant
scene in the life of the person
who passed away, and a short
witty poem.

4. The Memorial of the Victims of the
Communism and of the Resistance
• The Centre was founded in
1993 by Ana Blandiana and
Romulus Rusan.
• Created and administered
by the Civic Academy
Foundation,it is an institute of
research, museography and
education made out of the
ruins of the former Sighet
Prison in 1993.
• It presents the chronology of
the totalitarian system in
Communist Romania.

6. Cascada Cailor
It is the largest waterfall in Romania (90 meters
high), located near the winter mountain resort of
Borsa, part of the Rodnei Mountains.
It can be reached either by a one-hour walk
through the forest, or by riding the cable car to
the top of the ski area, followed by a short
descent through the forest.
The water falls in several stages, so it offers
magnificent views both in summer and in winter,
when the water is frozen.
The name of the waterfall is linked to a local
legend. It is said that herds of horses used to graze
at the top of the mountain from spring to autumn.
One day a bear came and attacked the animals,
who jumped off the mountain and fell into the
ravine that is now known as the Horses Falls.

7. Blue Lake

Another important tourist attraction in
Maramures, the Blue Lake is unique in
the world due to the fact that it
changes color depending on the
position of the sun and the temperature
of the water. Thus, in spring the lake is
blue, in summer it is dark green with
shades of emerald, and in autumn the
color transcends into a darker green,
even brown.
The scientific explanation for this
phenomenon lies in the process of the
lake's appearance: it was formed after
the collapse of a mine, so residual
minerals are what influence the color of
the water. The lake is only a 35-minute
walk from Baia Sprie city center.
8. Mocănița
• The only fully functional narrow-gauge
steam train in Europe, Mocănita is sure
to offer you a fairytale experience.
• The train departs from Viseu de Sus and
travels deep into the beautiful Vaserului
Valley, crossing the Maramures
Mountains Natural Park.

• The views are amazing – the train
crosses green forests, steep cliffs and
clear waters.
• The walk lasts 6-7 hours, depending on
the season and includes a stop for lunch
in Paltin, where people can take a
nature walk or admire magnificent
views from an observation platform.
• The ticket price varies between 12 and
15 euros for an adult.

9. RODNA MOUNTAINS
Pietrosul Rodnei (2303 meters) is the highest peak in the Eastern Carpathians and the
perfect choice for all those who love to spend time in nature. The hike is long, it takes
about 8-9 hours both ways.
