Lesson Learned: Perspectives on
conducing sexual violence research

The following presentation is intended to create
a discussion and dialogue among the students in
the KRG at Cal State East Bay.
While this presentation is focused on my
individual learning experiences, it is possible
that the “lessons” presented may resonate with
others who are interested in or are conducting
research in social justice.
My research approach
• Qualitative research approach
– Methodologies
• Case study
– Most of my data comes from interviews, field notes, journals,
reflection
– Why?
• In depth understanding of individual experiences and
perspectives
• Descriptives help to create a context
• Participant involvement in the research is important to
me as a researcher.

Know your audience
Think about/anticipate how to
respond and/or react
Understand mandatory reporting laws
Acknowledge power and status
