De Tocqueville Summary
1. De Tocqueville’s America
Ch. 13 How the Principle of Equality Naturally Divides the Americans into a Multitude of Small
Private Circles.
“The personal pride of individuals will always seeks to rise above the line” this statement
is true to the case of the types of people that must show that they are different and “better” than
the average-Joe. In the reading, the author makes a point that indirectly people are pre-eminence
over one another, and do not give any respect or feel that they do not owe anything to each other.
Citizens who do not fall into this category tend to go about their lives, seem to not be so
restricted to be living a certain way, or even bothered. However, these aristocrats, or people who
participate in political assemblies and courts of justice, often tend to have their own circle of
friends, have a private life, and are constantly being separated by a thin- invisible thread. Thus,
these citizens form a division of Americans who tend fall into these small private circles
Ch. 10 The Young Woman in the Character of a Wife
Whether biologically, observationally or simply the era she was born, a woman has been
taught to do what is expected of her, and voluntarily and who freely enters upon this
responsibility of being the little woman of the household once married. I believe that woman take
on more of the hard life nowadays because of the labor they must endure, nurturing, bringing up
a “proper” family, and making sure the house is presentable; all while trying to have a stable job
to help her husband. Women, even dating back to the Anglo- era, have been the backbone of any
man. They provide comfort, love, tenderness, and strength. Through countless times, a young
woman will push through many obstacles, adding age to herself, to achieve that fulfilling feeling
of providing for her family with everything they physically and mentally need.
