2. Learn how to develop effective breathing
Many ancient civilisations believe that your ‘breath is life,’ as the way you
breathe can affect your health, mood, productivity, stress levels, and can even
shorten your life. Many of us have unhealthy breathing habits as we hold our
breath, often without realising it, or breathe high in the chest or in a shallow,
irregular pattern. Breathing in this way triggers physiological and psychological
stress and anxiety – something you might not even be aware of doing.
Research shows that the majority of people reach peak respiratory function and
lung capacity in their mid-20’s, with this capacity slowly reducing as they get
older. Maintaining or improving your breathing capacity as you get older is therefore important for
your general health. As your posture can also affect your ability to breathe effectively, receiving
regular chiropractic care will support you in facilitating optimal breathing. Research shows that
people who breathe optimally, rarely suffer from ill-health, are a lot less prone to anxiety and live
longer.
So how do I develop effective breathing? The first thing to ascertain is whether you breathe from
your chest or your stomach area. You can do this by standing or sitting and placing your left hand
on your chest and your right hand on your stomach. Now breathe in. Which hand rises first? If your
left hand rises first, you are breathing from your chest. If your right hand raises first, you are
breathing from your stomach area – which is the aim. If you start focusing on breathing from your
stomach area, your breath will naturally be longer and deeper, which will
promote calmness within you. We recommend that you take the time to focus
on breathing from your stomach area by breathing in for 7 seconds,
holding it for 7 seconds and then breathing out for 7 seconds. Don’t
worry if you can’t do this for 7 seconds to begin with; do it for as long as you
can and then slowly build up to 7 seconds, and then ultimately for as long as
you can. Start by practicing this 3 x a day, 5 repetitions each time. Slowly
build up your practice. Also, try to start focusing on your breathing throughout
your day – whether while queuing at the supermarket or on the phone. Before
long, your breathing will happen naturally in a new way, blessing you with
many health benefits.

3. Become more mentally positive and meditate
Your mind is very powerful. As the saying goes, what you think you become. Similarly, whatever
the mind expects, it finds. A positive mind is more likely to facilitate happiness, joy, health and a
successful outcome to situations and actions compared to a negative one. You can therefore use
the power of your thoughts to improve your life and as a tool to support you in achieving your goals
and aspirations. To make changes in your thought processes and to start thinking in a more
positive way, you may wish to use affirmations. An affirmation is a positive statement, or
statements, that describe a desired situation, which you repeat frequently throughout the day, in
order to impress the subconscious mind and trigger it into positive action. Meditation is another
powerful technique which can have many benefits, including helping you to relax. If you are new to
meditation, a simple way to start is to sit with your spine erect, the palms of your hands open and
facing upwards and with your eyes closed. Depending on what is more comfortable for you, you
can sit in a chair or on the floor with your legs crossed. Once you are comfortable, start focusing
on your breathing. Follow your breath in and out. To begin with, do this for as long as you can, and
ultimately build up your practice to an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening.
