The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is the second part of The Hunger Games Trilogy, a novel that is set in a futuristic world after a war.
Read the plot of the film on the next two pages. Then read the statements above and decide whether they are true, false or not mentioned in the text.

5. One year after the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark return to district 12 in Panem, the post- apocalyptic country after a war in the USA. They both survived the games and this was interpreted as a rebellion against all powerful Capitol. President Snow doesn’t like this rebellion, so he warns Katniss to calm the feelings of people during the Victory Tour around the districts with the help of eccentric Effie Trinket. During their visit to district 11, a black old man holds up three fingers in sign of respect and honor to Katniss, but then he is taken by peacekeepers and killed in front of everyone, showing people that the Capitol will not accept rebellion from anyone.
Katniss gets furious, but Haymitch, her mentor and trainer, advises her to be careful, as the Capitol wants her dead. She lives now with her mum and her sister Primrose in a luxury house in Victor’s Village, but they are not happy, so she plans to run away with Gale, her love in District 12. But her plans are destroyed by Romulus Thread, a violent peacekeeper who starts a period of terror in the district. To their despair, Katniss and Peeta learn that the Capitol has designed a terrible plan to get rid of them and stop all ideas of rebellion. The 75th Hunger Games will have as tributes past victors from every district, including Katniss and Peeta.

6. During the training week, they visit President Snow in the Capitol. Cinna, Katniss’ stylist designs for her a beautiful wedding dress that catches fires and turns into a mockingjay, revealing Katniss as a future leader of the rebellion in Panem in front of the huge audience of Caesar Flickerman TV show. The Capitol doesn’t like this and with the help of Plutarch Heavensbee, the new gamemaker, they plot evil plans to kill Katniss in the jungle-like arena of the games. They also meet the other tributes: Gloss and Cashmere, a pair of brother and sister from district 1, two technology geeks, Wiress and Beetee from district 3 and Johanna from district 7. The most dangerous opponents from district 2, Brutus and Enobaria are professional, and equally dangerous is the deadly combination of jungle, island and beaches in the arena designed by Plutarch Heavensbee.
Handsome and arrogant Finnick and the old lady Mags from district 4 turn out to be allies in the arena. This is excellent, as apart from fighting the rest of the tributes, they have to survive the attack of wild monkeys, poisonous fog, dangerous thunderbolts and tidal waves.
The Hunger Games get more and more complicated and become a nightmare, so the surviving tributes need to get together and device a plan to stay alive and resist the Capitol… or kill one another in a blood-filled battle.

11. 1. Beautiful Cashmere is one half of the brother-sister tribute duo from District One. She and her brother Gloss are part of the professional pack, whose other members include Brutus and Enobaria from District Two.
2. Beetee is the male tribute from District Three. He gains attention for his use of electricity as a weapon, which won him his first Hunger Games. Johanna, District Seven tribute, calls him “Volts” for his particular skill set. 3. Enobaria is a tribute from District Two. At seventeen, she became known for using her teeth during the 62nd Hunger Games. After that, she had her teeth sharpened and added gold fang tips to them. 4. Finnick is the male tribute from District Four. His district is known for fishing and this trade allowed him to win his first games using a trident. Finnick is very handsome and is known for his many female lovers.
5. Mags is the oldest female tribute: she’s eighty. She comes from District Four and is mentor to Finnick. She volunteered to take the place of Finnick’s mad lover Annie in the 75th Games. 6. Johanna Mason is the tribute from District Seven. The main export from this district is wood, so Johanna knows how to handle an axe. She is sarcastic and unwelcoming, but soon proves to be a good ally to Katniss.
7. Wiress, the female tribute from District Three, is intelligent and inventor like Beetee, though she has trouble articulating her thoughts. Johanna nicknames her “Nuts” for her mental instability. ACTIVITY FOUR
WHICH TRIBUTE IS DESCRIBED?
The Capitol designs a plan to kill Katniss: The Quarter Quell. This means that victors from previous Hunger Games will be the tributes for the 75th Games. This time, the tributes will be more violent and dangerous, as they have already survived the previous games.

12. ACTIVITY FIVE - PRIMROSE’S LETTER
The Government in the Capitol fears a rebellion and sends peacekeepers to terrify the districts with brutality. Things get worse and more difficult for normal people. A period of oppression is going to start.
Imagine that this period has begun and Primrose writes a letter to Katniss. Some of the sentences are erased, so it’s your turn to read the sentences in the box and try to fill the letter completely.

From the beginning of the film until the last images we feel that a rebellion is going to start. Katniss imagines how life would be in a free Panem without the oppression of the Capitol.

DYSTOPIAN NOVELS FOR TEENS
The Hunger Games Trilogy are three novels written by Suzanne Collins. These books have become an international success and so have their film adaptations. The phenomenon shows that this type of teen literature set in a dystopian world are very appealing to young audiences worldwide.
A dystopia is a community or society that is in some important way undesirable or frightening. It is literally translated as “bad-place" and opposite of utopia. Such societies appear in many artistic works, particularly in stories set in a future. Dystopias are often characterized by dehumanization, totalitarian governments, environmental disaster or other characteristics associated with a cataclysmic decline in society.
Apart from The Hunger Games, other dystopian novels have become best sellers around the world and many have been adapted into films too. Read the article on the next two pages and then read these statements. Write the title of the novel that they are describing. Use a dictionary to help you with this exercise, if you need it.

15. “THE HUNGER GAMES” BY SUZANNE COLLINS
This is one of the most well-known dystopian books, and most others in the genre are compared to it. The trilogy tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl living in a harsh future. Her world is divided into 12 districts, all ruled over by the rich and powerful Capitol. Every year, a raffle (called the reaping) is held to determine which twenty four 12-18-year-olds will take part in the Hunger Games, a brutal fight to the death. Katniss volunteers when her sister’s name is called, and the plot spirals out from there.
The reason this book is so good and so unique is the detail put into Panem, Katniss' world, and the people who live in it. The most interesting part of the world of these novels is the huge contrast between the Capitol and the Districts; the Capitol citizens look down on and do not respect those from the Districts. The Hunger Games bears reference to our world because it shows what could happen if one nation or group took control of everyone else, and the affect that could have on everyone else, even children. This hugely popular franchise now has two films, with another two to follow soon, and a massive fan-base.
“LEGEND” BY MARIE LU
This is much less well known dystopian trilogy, but still one of the best, and one that deserves a lot more popularity. These books tell the story of a future where the USA has split into two warring nations: the Republic and the Colonies. Legend tells the stories of June Iparis, the Republic's most perfect prodigy, and Day, their most wanted criminal. It is written with alternating chapters in Day and June's perspectives, which is an unusual feature which gives the books more depth. Anyway, Day and June have no reason to ever meet… until the night June's brother Metias is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. June sets out on a mission to track down her brother's killer and bring him to justice, but on her trip she starts to discover the shocking secrets the Republic have been hiding. Maybe Day isn't her worst enemy after all…
The most unique thing about the dystopian world of Legend is how there are so many shocking twists about the Republic; there are dark secrets around every corner. Legend is related to our world today because the Trial that 12-year-olds take in the Republic reflects our attitude to wanting only the strongest and best people in our society.

16. “DIVERGENT” BY VERONICA ROTH
Divergent has seen a lot of publicity lately with the film released in March this year. But, as good as the film is, the book is so much better. This trilogy tells the story of 16-year-old Beatrice Prior who lives in a future where her city is divided into five "factions". Each of these believe the old world fell because of a different bad human trait, and now live trying to be the opposite of that. Beatrice grew up in Abnegation, the selfless faction, but now has the option of moving to a new faction. But that would mean leaving her beloved family behind… After an aptitude test, it is determined that Tris is equally selfless, and brave, and knowledgeable. She is Divergent. But what does that mean, and which faction should she choose?
This is a thrilling story with action, romance and adventure. The most unique thing about the world of the Divergent trilogy is how the factions in Tris's city are so different, and how they react to each other's very different views. Divergent relates to our world because it shows how people can split apart a lot over a small difference in opinion.
“THE MAZE RUNNER” BY JAMES DASHNER
This trilogy and prequel is a really interesting and different dystopia. The first book takes place in The Glade, a small area surrounded by a huge stone maze. Inside the glade are about fifty boys all aged between 12 and 18… and none of them remember anything about their previous lives except their first names. Each month a new boy arrives through an old lift. When Thomas arrives, the gladers notice that things start to change. Thomas seems different, more curious than the previous boys, and has a strange urge to join the runners, the gladers who try to find a way out of the deadly and mysterious maze. Then one day later, a girl arrives into the glade and everything changes.
This is an exciting dystopian world and the books are filled with mystery and suspense. Maze Runner will probably appeal to boys more than the other books, but it really is for both genders. The characters in this are excellent, particularly Newt and Teresa. This is also one of the most original worlds; you won't find another book like it.
“UGLIES” BY SCOTT WESTERFELD
Uglies is one of the first books in this genre; it was published in 2005, well before Hunger Games or Divergent. This trilogy focuses on themes of beauty and identity with some stunning twists, and tells the story of Tally Youngblood, who is alone in a world where your sixteenth birthday brings a life-changing operation to turn you from a vile Ugly to a perfect and attractive Pretty. Tally is 15, and her best friend Peris has already turned pretty. One day, Tally meets Shay, an Ugly with the exact same birthday as her. The two become great friends, playing tricks and hoverboarding. But it turns out that Shay isn't too keen to be made pretty; she's heard of a seemingly better alternative. When Shay runs away, Tally is faced with the worst choice she could imagine. Will she turn pretty at all? The most unique thing about the future of Uglies is how it relates to our world today, with all the current anxiety about girls worrying obsessively over their appearance.

Francis Lawrence: Well, Katniss is different because she’s been through the games. I think that was one of the things that really interested me most about the material and about this book was that we get to start to see the kind of effects that the games have on people, the effects that violence has on people ...
Suzanne Collins: She’s got a lot of classic post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. She has nightmares. She has flashbacks. And in the beginning you can see she’s practicing avoidance. She’s completely pushed Peeta to arm’s length, you know? She’s trying to stay away from him. Why? Because everything associated with him except some very early childhood memories are associated with the Games. She’s conflicted to some degree about her relationship with Prim because she couldn’t save Rue. So she’s dealing with all that, and her method of dealing with it is to go to the woods and be alone and keep all of that as far away as possible, because there just are so many triggers in her everyday life

SUZANNE COLLINS, AUTORA DEL LIBRO
Suzanne Collins nació en 1962 en Hartford, Connecticut, Estados Unidos. Es escritora y guionista. Vive en Connecticut con Cap Prylor, su marido, y sus hijos Charlie e Isabel.
La carrera de Suzanne empezó en 1991, como guionista en programas de televisión para niños. También fue la guionista principal de Clifford, el gran perro rojo (en inglés Clifford Puppy Days) y recibió una nominación de la Writers Guild of America por coescribir Santa, Baby!, un especial de Navidad.
El conocer al autor de libros para niños, James Proimos, mientras trabajaba en un programa de televisión, le inspiró para escribir libros para niños por su cuenta. La inspiración de su primer libro, Gregor el Subterráneo, de la saga Las Crónicas de las Tierras Bajas, le vino en parte de Alicia en el país de las maravillas.
Collins también ha escrito un libro de imágenes que riman, ilustrado por Mike Lester, titulado Cuando Charlie McButton perdió el poder.

TESEO Y EL MINOTAURO
En la mitología griega, se cuenta que el rey Minos de Creta tenía un hijo, Androgeo, atleta sobresaliente en todos los ejercicios que llegó a Atenas para participar en los juegos. Tras vencer a todos sus competidores, el rey de Atenas celoso de su fuerza y habilidad le invitó a enfrentarse al toro de Maratón. El joven aceptó pero fue muerto por la bestia.
Minos, al enterarse de la trágica noticia, juró vengarse reuniendo a su ejército y dirigiéndose a Atenas que pronto tuvo que capitular y negociar la paz. El rey cretense recibió a los embajadores atenienses indicándoles que habían asesinado cruelmente a su hijo y que las condiciones para la paz eran las siguientes: Atenas debía enviar cada nueve años siete jóvenes y siete doncellas a Creta para que, con su vida, pagaran por la de su hijo fallecido. Los embajadores se sintieron presos de terror cuando el rey añadió que los jóvenes serían ofrecidos al Minotauro, un monstruo que vivía en un laberinto y se alimentaba de carne humana. Tan sólo se les daba una única concesión: si uno de los jóvenes conseguía el triunfo, la ciudad se libraría del atroz atributo.
En el tercer envío Teseo, hijo de Minos, se presentó voluntariamente ante su padre para que le permitiera ser parte de la ofrenda, lo dejara acompañar a las víctimas y enfrentarse al Minotauro. Al llegar a Creta, la princesa Ariadna, hermana del Minotauro se enamoró de él y le propuso ayudarlo a cambio de que se la llevara de vuelta a Atenas y la convirtiera en su esposa. Teseo aceptó y la ayuda de Ariadna consistió en darle un ovillo de hilo que éste ató por uno de los extremos a la puerta del laberinto. Así Teseo entró en el laberinto hasta encontrarse con el Minotauro al que dio muerte. A continuación recogió el hilo, salió del laberinto y se embarcó de vuelta a Atenas acompañado por Ariadna y el resto de atenienses.
