Basketball is a sport played by two teams of five players on a court. The objective is to shoot a ball through a hoop mounted high on a backboard at each end of the court. A team scores by shooting the ball through their opponent's basket. Additional rules govern traveling, dribbling, fouls and other aspects of play. Basketball originated in the late 19th century in the United States and has since grown into a global sport governed by the International Basketball Federation.
