1. How to teach Sciences?
Young children particularly from age three to eight learn things by doing or
experiencing them. In teaching science in older learners, we usually use abstract ideas
and concepts. In young learners, it is difficult for them to grasp learning through abstract
concepts. For this reason it is important for us teachers to focus science lessons around
things that they can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell so that they can continually
absorb science as they discover all sorts of new and different things about the world
around them, how things work, and about themselves and others. These discoveries by
children, is science in a very real way.
These young learners, by learning things through experiencing, it is normal for
them to be more curious about everything they see, smell, hear and, touch. Because
they usually experiment on things during these ages, it is the best chance for us
teachers to provide them opportunities by letting them learn on their own way for them
to encourage loving science. Through hands-on learning, encouraging learners to love
science is more possible because they are on the ages of learning things the most.
Because young children are curious during these ages, they tend to ask
questions about everything that would also give them opportunities to answer their own
questions. Our role as teachers is to provide them opportunities to love and learn in
their own ways of learning. As teachers, we give them opportunities to learn through
hands-on activities like involving them in our daily tasks about science and make it as a
routine as possible.
2. Make a lesson plan.
Integrative Thematic Approach
I. Objectives
a. To match word-picture of plant
b. To identify the initial sound
c. To count the number of syllables.
II. Subject Matter:
A. Topic: Word-picture of Plant
B. Reference: NKCG Book & Enriched Integrated Preschool Curriculum
C. Materials: word picture cards, large picture or drawing of a tree, visual
aids.
D. Value: Taking care of plant
III. Procedure:
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Prayer
2. Attendance
3. Review
4. Drill
Sing a song about plant.
5. Motivation
Show large picture or drawing of a tree and let the pupils tell something
about what they see.
B. Lesson Proper
Tell a short story about plant.
“The Little Rose Plant”
A little Rose plant lived inside a dark damp room. One day she heard a
soft tapping on her door, “Who’s there?” she asked. “I am little Raindrop.
Please let me in,” cried the visitor. “No way!” said the Rose plant angrily. Little
Raindrop was very sad for being turned away. After sometime the Rose plant
heard a soft rustle near the door. “Who’s there now?” she asked. “I am Sunny
Sunshine,” said the new visitor. “I don’t have time for sunshine,” said the Rose
plant haughtily. A few days later, the leaves of the Rose plant turned brown
in color, and her young stem began drooping. Then one day, she heard the
chirping of birds, and opened her door to see outside. It was spring and there
were colorful flowers and greenery all around. The Rose plant realized her
mistake. So when Rain and Sunshine returned, she welcomed them warmly.
And after a few days she had a pretty pink rose, for which she thanked the
Raindrop and the Sunshine.
Activity 1. “Matching Cards”
1. Teacher places a large picture of a tree on the board and places word
cards (branch, leaves, roots, fruits, and stem)
2. Teacher calls on volunteers to identify parts of the tree and match word
card to each plant.
Activity 2. “ Identification”
1. Identify the initial sound of each word.
 Branch
 Leaves
 Fruits
 Stem
 Roots
2. Make a clap then count the number of syllables in each word.
 Branch
 Leaves
 Fruits
 Stem
 Roots
C. Analysis: Are the plants important? Why?
IV. Evaluation
Direction: Match the word-picture to the different parts of a tree.
Roots
Leaves
Fruits
Stem
Branch
V. Assignment
Direction: Draw a mango tree on a bond paper.
3. How important in teaching science?
Teaching science is important for kids for it involves a lot of communication with
other people. It also develops patience and perseverance in kids. It helps kids to think
about what could happen before they do it, to create a hypothesis in their mind. Then
kids learn that not everything works the first time. Through science, it can spark in kid’s
mind that they, too, can help solve the world’s big problems.
4. Brain-Based Approach Sample Lesson Plan
This learning theory is based on the structure and function of the brain. As long as the
brain is not prohibited from fulfilling its normal processes, learning will occur.
Geoffrey and Renate Caine, leaders in brain-based learning research, have modified
their principles on the topic.
Sample Lesson Plan
I. Objectives:
a. To identify the different things used to keep our body clean
b. To know the ways of taking care of our body.
c. To name ways of taking care of our body.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Taking Care of our Body
B. Reference: NKCG book pp 87-98
C. Materials: picture of the body (neat & dirty), visual aids
D. Value: Neatness
III. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
1. Drill:
Sing a song “This is the way”
This is the way I wash my hands,
Wash my hands,
Wash my hands,
This is the way I wash my hands
So early in the morning.
Change wash my hands…comb my hair, fix my shirt, scrub my knees, etc.
2. Review
3. Motivation
Post a picture/drawing of a child who is well-groomed
Post a picture of a child who is not well-groomed. Let the pupils
compare it and describe of what they see.
B. Lesson Proper
Tell a story about “Ang Prinsepeng Ayaw Maligo”
Questions:
1. What will happen if ou do not wash our hands? Clean your body?
2. What will happen if you do not take a bath? Brush your teeth?
Group Activity: Pantomime
1. Divide the class into 2 groups.
2. The teacher acts one way of how we can take care of our body.
3. The teacher acts it out, example – brushing teeth
4. The members of the other group will try to guess what is being acted
out.
5. The first group will guess correctly is the winner.
C. Analysis:
There are things we use to keep our body clean. What are they?
IV. Evaluation
Direction: Mark check ( ) if the picture shows taking care of the body.
V. Assignment
Direction: Cut-out pictures on how to take care of our body in the old
magazines/newspapers. Paste it on the clean bond paper.
