Matter is anything that has volume or mass. The volume of liquids is measured in liters and milliliters by looking at the bottom of the curved meniscus in a graduated cylinder. The volume of solids is expressed in cubic meters or centimeters by multiplying the length, width, and height. Mass is the amount of matter that makes up an object and does not change over time, while weight depends on gravity and can change depending on location.

Matter Notes
1. Matter: Matter- anything that has volume or mass. Matter has volume: The amount of space taken up, or occupied by an object. Liquid Volume: Measuring liquid volume- When measuring liquids in a graduated cylinder, there is a meniscus, the curve that you see in the container. When measuring the volume of a liquid, you must look at the bottom of the meniscus. Liters and milliliters (L) (ml) are the units used most to measure liquids. Solid Volume The volume of any solid is expressed in cubic meters (m3) having three dimensions. Cubic meters and cubic centimeters (m3) (cm3) are the units used to measure solids for volume. The 3 shows the three quantities that were multiplied. For a rectangular object the quantities are LxWxH. 1mx1mx1m=1m3 Comparing Solid and Liquid Volumes- 1mL=1cm3 Volume of Gas- Gas expands to fill its container, so by knowing the volume of the container, you know the volume of the gas. Matter has Mass- Mass is the amount of matter that something is made of. Ex. The Earth is made up of a large amount of matter, therefore it has a large mass. Even a speck of dust is made of matter, it has mass. **How does the mass of a puppy change over time? **Why doesn’t the mass of a bowling ball change over time? The difference between mass and weight Weight is different from mass. Gravity- Is the force of attraction between objects that is due to their masses. This attraction causes objects to exert a pull on other objects! A measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object is called weight. At a Distance The attraction between objects decreases as the distance between them increases. Therefore, the gravitational force exerted on objects also decreases as the distance increases. MASS IS……. -a measure of the amount of matter in an object -always constant for an object regardless of where the object is in the universe -measured with a balance -expressed in Kilograms (kg) Grams (g) and milligrams (mg) WEIGHT IS…… -the measure of the gravitational force on an object -varied depending on where the object is in relation to the Earth, or any other large body -measured using a spring scale -expressed in newtons (N) EX- if all of your school books combined have a mass of 3kg, what is their total weight in newtons? 1kg=10N 1kg= 1kg=1,000 g A newton is approx equal to the weight of a 100g mass on Earth.
