Definition
• process through which supervisor assigns part of
authority or rights to subordinate.
• transfer authority downward with aim of seeking
assistance.
NB
Responsibility remains with superior. He is therefore
accountable for whatever the subordinate does.
Process of Delegation
1. Identification of tasks to be delegated
2. Identifying persons to delegate to
3. Specifying degree of delegation
4. Assignment of duties- tasks and expected results
5. Granting of Authority- rights and power
6. Clarifying level of accountability

• Leads to better co-ordination of organization’s
activities
• Reduces managerial work load
• Promotes utilization of specialists
• Encourages creativity and efficiency.

• Grant authority commensurate with responsibility
• Define expected results
• Consider capabilities (and willingness) of subordinates.
• Ensure authority is clearly stated to all
• Maintain flexible attitude to modify /revoke authority where
necessary
• Follow unity of command and chain of command
• Be willing to delegate
