Australian Flood Phone Counselling Services Register
1. Australian Flood Phone Counselling Services Register
Please read this document before using the register for the first time
Welcome to the ACA Flood Phone Counselling Services Register. This register has been made available by ACA to ensure
members of the public impacted on by the recent floods throughout Australia have easy access to a cost free professional
counselling service. Anyone wishing to speak to a counsellor in relation to being affected by the flood disaster in any way
can use the register to contact a counsellor for emotional support in their state.
ACA would like to acknowledge that these counsellors have donated their time and services as their contribution to helping
all those impacted on by the floods. ACA also sends its sincere condolences to all those who have lost family and friends in
the floods and a speedy recovery to those injured. ACA would also like to acknowledge the contributions of all the
Emergency Services personnel who responded to the flood disaster. We hope this service is of some help to all those
impacted on by floods in any way.
Service Providers: All the counsellors who have offered their services free of charge to the Australian community in
relation to the flood disaster are formally trained and registered with their appropriate professional bodies and/or state
2. registration boards. They also have the appropriate training and qualifications to offer help to those who are suffering from
emotional issues that are related to trauma, grief and/or loss.
The register outlines the times and days the counsellors are available for you, please do not ring outside of these
times.
Note: This is a free phone counselling service however your contracted phone service provider fees will still be
relevant.
Confidentiality: Counsellors are bound to rules of confidentiality as outlined in the code of conduct of their registering
body. In essence counsellors are not bound by confidentiality if a client:
1. Indicates they are going to self harm or harm others, and/or
2. Indicates they are going to commit or engage in an illegal act.
For further information on confidentiality issues you should discuss this with the counsellor prior to engaging in the
counselling process.
Counselling is a proven effective way of dealing with exposure to a crisis or trauma, particularly as a form of early
intervention. Therapeutical counselling is a formal process that is provided by trained registered counselling professionals.
These professionals can come from various backgrounds such a social work, psychology, psychotherapy or counselling.
However they are all trained to provide therapeutical counselling services. Therapeutical counselling is non invasive and
drug free.
3. Trauma Symptoms: Anyone suffering from trauma may display some of the following symptoms or reactions;
Problems sleeping
Loss of appetite
Anger and or feelings of injustice
Changes to behaviour
Hyper vigilance
Flash backs or recurring dreams
Feelings of guilt
Inappropriately and continually refer to the event
Emotional numbness
Retreating within ones self
It is normal for humans to react to trauma or a crisis in this way, displaying one or several of these symptoms is normal and
is to be expected. Counselling can help you to work through these issues minimising their impact.
Severe or acute cases of trauma (when symptoms persist for more than several weeks and interfere with normal functioning)
may require management through psychological services available through the Better Access Initiative. For further
information on this scheme see your GP.
Trauma can develop into a chronic condition if symptoms persist over time. This is why early intervention should be sought
immediately if symptoms occur.
4. It is highly unadvisable for anyone suffering from trauma or trauma related issues to self medicate with prescription
medication, alcohol or illicit drugs. Seek professional advice from a mental health professional or GP if you believe
you need pharmaceutical interventions.
How you can help someone who has experienced a traumatic event.
Remain calm and reassuring. We all need a rock sometime in our lives.
Listen to what they have to say and do not respond inappropriately with comments such as “get over it” or “time will
heal”. Sometimes the best response is nothing, especially if you cannot relate to the situation, or just hold the person
if appropriate.
Normalise the person’s feelings. Acknowledge that what they are going through is normal in light of their experience.
Promote strategies suggested by the counsellor or positive coping skills.
Remind the person of their strengths and focus on positive aspects of their personality.
Encourage the person to talk about their feelings however it is not advisable to ask or encourage victims to verbally
relive the experience. They may or may not do this in their own time and that is OK either way.
If the person is going to inspect the damage caused to their home by the flood accompany them or organise for
someone to accompany them to provide support.
Children:
The best way to help children is too simply listen to them in a non judgmental manner remembering they will process
a trauma or crisis differently to adults.
Constantly reassure them they are safe.
Be honest in your responses.
Supervise their exposure to the media and minimise exposure to graphic descriptions or scenes of devastation and/or
loss of life.
Ask them how they are feeling about what they are experiencing.
5. Discuss in an open manner with children what they have seen and heard.
Do not leave children unsupervised in front of television or to the radio whilst there is a high volume of information
being disseminated about the disaster.
Don’t forget children need lots of hugs in times of crisis.
Complaints: If for any reason you are unsatisfied with the service you receive from a provider or have any questions in
regards to the counselling process please ring ACA on 1300 784 333. Services by providers are only available in Australia.
Currently the Federal government does not acknowledge counselling services through Medicare rebates. If you wish to
know more about our lobbying efforts to receive government recognition of professional counselling services delivered by
registered counsellors please contact ACA.
