1. Deconstruction of Piranha
It starts of showing the company of the film , which in this case is ‘ Dimension films’ and
we already get an insight on what the film is going to be about. The colour that the text is
in is watery blue the back ground is dark, as if its underwater. Also the use of sound helps
very much, we get to hear an non-digetic soundtrack of the piranhas making noise. So
already within the 6th second of the movie we already get into the feel of the movie. And
due to the sound and colour, we get the theme of thriller.
After it cuts to a wide shot of the open location, a rural place with big rocks and hills, as
the camera pans we get to see more of the surroundings. The colour of the typography
used is lushes green to match the grass. The added soundtrack of an ambient natural
sound is added to emphasis the amount of space and wilderness there is. Also in the
content of thriller, this may be an indication of solidarity and being alone. Then we get a
shot of a sign which says ‘STOP restricted access’ and its hanged up on a fence. So the
mise-un-scene helps to convey an image of security and a feeling that we shouldn’t be
there. The added sound affect of the sign banging on the fence also give a spooky vibe,
maybe even haunting. So we’re shown lots of elements that a good thriller sounds have. A
sense of why we are positioned there, and curiosity to see what beyond the fence.
In the same shot , when it tracks to the side, we hear the rust of the metal been scraped
together by the wind, this is also another component of a thriller, its almost spooky,
wrong, devilish and a cloth hanging from the fence is also a good bit that the director
added to place fear in the audience. The whole in the fence also adds to the realism of
thriller, who did it ? why? Who was trying to enter or what is trying to escape. Just by
adding a dent in the fence it adds allot of confusion and questions in the views mind, and
this is exactly what a thriller should do, make your think.
Then it cuts to a shot of a crawling lizard and slowly zooms up on it, the non-digetic
dramatic violin sound track helps to add tension. The use of lighting is very thriller like, it
uses light and low key lighting in happy places, in shit shot low key lighting is used to add
more shows and therefore add more mystery to the movie. The sound affect of the eagle
is genius in my opinion, it gives use the audience a vibe of space and wilderness and at the
same time makes us cautious of the predator because in this shot we are positioned to
side with the lizard. Then cuts to a beautiful setting of the whole location, looks like a
colourful mystical place, a paradise, the
sound from the previous shot bridges to
this one.
