This document discusses using geographical indications (GI) to protect traditional knowledge in India. It defines traditional knowledge and explains its economic and cultural value. GI protection can apply to tangible manifestations of traditional knowledge identified with a geographical region. The Indian GI law facilitates inclusive growth based on tradition and gives rights to community organizations. However, there are issues with the policy focus, documentation, post-registration support, and stakeholder identification that could be addressed through expanding existing databases, providing business support, and increasing research on potential GIs. Overall, the document argues that GI is a good form of protection for tangible traditional knowledge with a geographic origin that can promote inclusive development.
