2. Completing homework and studying is like training for a
sport; it is hard work that takes self-motivation,
responsibility, and discipline.
However, instead of winning a championship, by studying &
completing review assignments at home you are training to
excel academically!
3. HOMEWORK STRATEGIES THAT WORK:
1) CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:
Read the directions for each homework assignment and
make sure you understand them. Don’t wait until you are
home. If you are not sure what to do, then ask your teacher
for help before going home (use Flex or Tutorial to ask
questions).
2) LOG AND ORGANIZE YOUR HOMEWORK:
It should be a habit for you to record your homework
assignments in your planner on Sunday night or Monday. In
addition, each time you are given a homework update in
class, record it in your planner.
4. 3) SCHEDULE HOMEWORK:
• Create a time log and figure out the best time of day to start your homework.
• Times may be different each due to sports and afterschool activities.
• Schedule times for breaks, dinner and personal time.
4) FIND THE RIGHT PLACE TO DO YOUR HOMEWORK:
The place where you do your homework is important. You need to find a place that has the
least amount of distractions. You also want to try to use the same place each time. You
don’t want to be in front of the T.V. or lying on a comfy bed. If possible, it is best to use a
desk or table.
5) GET TO WORK:
Gather all materials and get started. Don’t make excuses and become sidetracked. It is
best to start with the most difficult assignments first. This is because when you start your
homework, you have more energy and mental power to tackle the difficult work.
5. 6) HAVE A HOMEWORK LIFELINE: Occasionally, you will have difficulty with some
homework assignments or problems and will need help.
• First, see if someone at home may be able to help you.
• If you still need help, then make sure you have a phone number or email of a responsible friend at
school that you can contact.
7) MOVE ON:
If you are having difficulty with an assignment or problem, and there in no help,
don’t obsess trying to complete it. Move on to the next problem. A key to
completing homework is progress. No progress is made if you stay stuck on one
problem. When this happens, work on something else, and come back to it at the
end for one more attempt. If you are unable to complete an assignment because
you didn’t understand it, you should speak with your teacher the next day and ask
for assistance.
6. 7) ORGANIZE AND PACK IT UP:
When you are done with your homework assignments mark them as done in your
planner and immediately place them into the right location in your notebook or
computer file. If it is a hardcopy, make sure to place everything neatly into your
backpack so that it is ready to go in the morning.
8) REWARD YOURSELF:
When you are done with your homework and everything is packed away, reward
yourself. Knowing that you are going to receive a reward will help keep you
motivated. A reward will help energize you when doing your homework. Keep the
reward simple and healthy.
7. YOU CAN DO IT!
Making excuses is easy but getting your homework done & studying takes hard work
and discipline. Learning to follow these homework strategies will make homework
easier to complete and help you develop positive study habits.
