Principle of Operation
The sensing element (lumiphore) is activated, or excited
when illuminated with a blue light. When activated, the
lumiphore then emits blue light in an intensity that is
inversely proportional to the amount of oxygen present in
the water. There is also a time delay between the peak
emission of blue light and peak response of fluoresced red
light. The amount of delay is inversely proportional to the
amount of oxygen present. This time delay can be
expressed as a phase shift between the wave patterns of
incident blue light and the fluoresced red light. This is in
turn reported by the electronics into a ppm or mg/l reading
of Dissolved Oxygen. The advantages of this technology
are that it is more stable than traditional electrochemical
devices and far more resistant to abrasion. By using the
state of the art sensor and electronics together the
reliability, accuracy, and flexibility of the OxySense Meter is
far superior to that of its competitors.
Autoclean and Auto-verification
The OxySense Meter is the first of its kind in the world to
offer automatic in situ sensor verification as an option. The
OxySense is able to reduce maintenance by automatically
checking it’s sensor operation at user defined time
intervals. Calibration on the In-Situ sensor is normally
required only once per annum so with the automatic sensor
verification option and the self clean option the sensor may
not need to be inspected at all for a full year.

6. Principle of Operation
Multi-beam Technology
Each probe is equipped with 2 light sources and 4
detectors. Each light source uses long-life emitters (at least
20,000 operating hours), and these are turned off when not
required to conserve energy and extend the life.
By using multiple light emitters and detectors in a single
probe it is possible to:
• Measure solids from 0.02 NTU to 8% solids
• Monitor and compensate for fouling of the optics
• Monitor and compensate for aging of the optics
• Measure the forward scattering of light (low NTU
values)
• Measure the side scattering of light
(ISO7027 requires a 90° side scatter
measurement). (NTU)
• Measure transmitted light (low % solids)
• Measure the back scatter of light (higher % solids)
The electronics provide a fully scalable output allowing the
CRIUS® SoliSense® to measure any part, or the whole of
the scale from 0.02 NTU to 8% solids. The sensor probe
comes equipped with the capability of having a water jet
regularly sweep over the optical lenses keeping them clean.
If you have an application that ranges from low NTU all the
way to %age solids then the CRIUS® SoliSense® is
certainly the monitor for you! With only 3 or 4 calibration
points you can accurately monitor your process all the way
from low NTU to 8% solids.

Principle of Operation
At the Heart of the CRONOS pHSense are the pH
electrodes. These electrodes are patented and have a
large area electrochemically active solid polymer junction.
This innovative design makes the electrodes more
responsive and with a longer life than ordinary electrodes
(typically 3 years). Although they command a higher price
in the market place these sensors are more than cost
effective with their longer life and considerably lower
maintenance requirements, typically only needing
calibration once per two or three months.
Despite all of the additional functionality that this unit has to
offer, the purchase costs are less than or comparable to, its
competitors.
Autoflush and AutoCal
As described in seperate brochures, the pHSense can
come equipped to automatically clean itself or calibrate at

Principle of Operation
At the Heart of the CRONOS ORPSense are the ORP
electrodes. These electrodes are patented and are filled
with a polymeric gel. This innovative design makes the
electrodes more responsive and with a longer life than
ordinary electrodes (up to 3 years). Although they
command a higher price in the market place these sensors
are more than cost effective with their longer life and
considerably lower maintenance requirements, typically
only needing calibration once per two or three months.
Despite all of the additional functionality that this unit has to
offer, the purchase costs are less than or comparable to, its
competitors!
Autoflush and AutoCal
As described in seperate brochures, the ORPSense can
come equipped to automatically clean itself or calibrate at

useful in food preparation, pulp and paper, and many
applications where there is likely to be a build up of solids

► Better Bathing Experience
► Reduced CO2 Emissions
► Reduced Electricity Usage
► Reduced Chemical Usage

18. Introduction
The AquaSense range of pool controllers has been designed
to three criteria:-
• Improved Safety - better sensors lead to better
process control which leads to less variation in
chlorine residuals even with highly variable bathing
load.
• Improved Control - better process control leads to
reduced chemical usage, lower costs and an
improved bathing experience.
• Reduced Costs - lower chemical costs, less
expensive controllers, hugely reduced electrical usage
costs are just a few of the ways that the AquaSense
can save you money which can pay for a new
controller in just a few months.
Sensors
Traditionally pool chemistry has been controlled by using
ORP (Redox) or Residual Chlorine Sensors. The quality of
the sensors has a huge effect on the ability of the controller
to maintain a safe and pleasant bathing water. The sensors
used in AquaSense controllers are the best available in the
world today and are exactly the same sensors that are used
to monitor and control drinking water in many municipal
drinking water plants worldwide.
Chlorine Sensors
Three sensors are available to measure; free chlorine, total
chlorine, or chlorine in the presence of cyanuric acid. All of
these sensors have a long life (10 years) with reduced
maintenance and calibration requirements. they are very
high quality and very easy to own. Being able to accurately
measure the chlorine and respond to varying bathing loads
means that pools and spas can operate at lower chlorine
levels, reducing the formation of unpleasant combined
chlorines and reducing the chemical usage, thereby reducing
costs and reducing emissions, all while providing a better
bathing experience.
pH and ORP Sensors
The pH and ORP sensors are made specifically for the
AquaSense controllers and come with either a 12 or 18
month warranty. These AquaSense pH and ORP sensors are
also exactly the same as those used in the water industry
and are not the low cost, low quality sensors that are often
supplied into the Pool Industry.
Remote Access & Text Alarms
More and more pools are maintained by service
professionals that are based off-site and the ability of these
engineers to respond quickly and effectively to a process
upset at a pool depends on them getting the correct
information as soon as possible. The CRIUS® AquaSense
and the CRATOS AquaSense can come equipped with their
own integral GSM, GPRS or CDMA modem. This in turn
allows anyone with the appropriate security level to receive
text alarms relating to the chemistry in the pool or spa and
also allows them to log in to the controller over the internet
and perform almost any action that they could do if they were
standing in front of the instrument.
(For an online demonstration of this please go to
www.processinstruments.net/products/remote-access-
demo.php)
The highly sophisticated pro-active text alarms and remote
access capability of the CRIUS® AquaSense and CRATOS
AquaSense, means that:-
• Improved Communication - the right people know as
soon as something happens.
• Improved Control - your expert is in your pool room
no matter where they are.
• Less Time to Fix Problems - the time taken to fix
any problems is greatly reduced.
• Reduced Costs - time, cost and car exhaust
emissions are reduced.
"Since installing two CRIUS AquaSense
in 2008, our control over the pool chemistry has
greatly improved, leading to a better bathing experience
for our customers"
Ron Sykes, UK
"I have installed many pool controllers over the
years and the quality of the AquaSense sensors is the
best there is"
Lester Simmonds, UK
"Being able to remotely access and
control the AquaSense pool controller allows us to
provide a better service to our customers and a better
bathing experience to theirs' "
Steve Murphy, UK
19. BMS
Many leisure facilities are now fitted with sophisticated BMS
(Building Management Systems) and all three Pool and Spa
controllers are able to communicate directly to the BMS
whatever system it might be. Each of the Pool and Spa
controllers from Pi can come equipped with a range of
communication protocols including LAN, Profibus, Modbus
and more traditional analogue and digital outputs.
Save Money and the Planet!
Most pool recirculating pumps are over specified for the duty
required and as such there is scope to turn them down and
save considerable amounts of money on the electricity
usage. Whenever you save electricity you are reducing the
CO2 emissions and carbon footprint of your pool and spa and
for many organisation reducing CO2 emissions is a
significant factor in choosing which equipmrnt to purchase. It
might not save the planet but it is a good start! In order to
turn down the pool recirculating pump the pump motor must
be fitted with an invertor. The question then arises - on what
basis do we turn the motor down?
Each pool has a minimum turnover set by the manufacturer
or consultant at the time of installation. The CRIUS® or
CRATOS AquaSense allows the user to turn down the
recirculating pump during periods of non pool use (overnight)
to the minimum level. While the pool is being used the
recirculating pump motor is set based on chlorine demand
which is proportional to bathing load. This ability to control
the recirculating pump based on chlorine demand means
that pool operators can save significant sums of money on
electricity during the day when electricity costs the most.

21. PolySense - Polymer Control for Sludge Dewatering
The PolySense utilizes an online measurement of the cake dry solids and an online measurement of the solids in the
centrate/filtrate to control the polymer addition and the sludge feed rate, in order to optimise the process.
This gives you:
• Typically 25% reduction in polymer usage
• Increased cake solids
• Reduced transportation costs
• Less foaming
• Reduced solids in the centrate/filtrate
• Reduced operator reliance
• Capital payback, often in less than 18 months
"PolySense has revolutionised the
dewatering of our sludge, we get drier
cake, less cost and less process
upsets", David Bennett, UK
Why the Need for Automatic Polymer Control?
The Problem
The consequences of overdosing polymer to a dewatering device such as a centrifuge are much less than the
consequences of underdosing and with time pressures on operators, this inevitably leads to overdosing on most
centrifuges and belt filters. This overdosing gives the operator a time ‘buffer’ against process variations.
Overdosing of the polymer can lead to:-
• increased polymer costs
• increased solids in the centrate
• increased foaming in the centrate
• decreased solids in the cake
• increased transport costs per tonne of waste
• increased load on the works
• reduced efficiency of driers and digesters
The Solution
The PolySense is a simple, but effective and reliable method of controlling the polymer dosing via the polymer dosing
pump and in some cases the feed rate to the centrifuge. It does this by making reliable online measurements of the dry
solids of the cake, and of the suspended solids in the centrate/filtrate, and in some cases the feed solids. These
measurements are the key to the success of the PolySense and the suspended solids instrument includes debubbling
technology and self-cleaning where required. Essentially the PolySense measures the suspended solids in the centrate
(or sludge feed) and the dry solids in the cake and adjusts the polymer dosing pump, (and in some cases the feed
pump), to maintain those ranges of cake solids and centrate suspended solids that produce the best outcomes for the
plant. Whilst the PolySense does not monitor or control all aspects of the sludge dewatering equipment such as the
speed of the centrifuge, it provides a reliable and much improved process control to the more traditional manual control.
22. Case History
In late 2008 a compliance engineer for one of the UK
Waste Water Utilities contacted Pi in order to start the
process of determining the best instrumentation to control
his Alfa Laval dewatering centrifuge. He had determined
that by manually controlling the centrifuge and constantly
making small adjustments to the poly dose he could
significantly reduce his poly usage whilst maintaining the
cake solids. Having determined this manually he
approached Pi seeking to automate the process. This was
a perfect application for the PolySense.
In consultation with the engineer, it was determined that
he could achieve his goals using a two point
measurement system (online cake solids and online
suspended solids in the centrate), with the appropriate
control algorithm feeding back to the DCS that would in
turn control the polymer feed pump. His total cost
including installation and commissioning was £26,000 and
his average reduction in poly usage was 25% giving a
payback inside 18 months.
“Although the financial justification for the project was
based on polymer savings alone the additional benefits
were significant. The reduction in Carbon Footprint is as
yet unquantified but significant, and the improved
consistency of cake solids has resulted in higher average
cake solids and a reduction in transportation costs. The
operators have all bought in to the system and are happy
that they are freed up to carry out their other duties secure
in the knowledge that if anything should go wrong they will
be informed via the alarms generated from the control
signals. The company are now beginning the process of
rolling the system out across other sites.”
Multiple Control Options
During normal operation the PolySense will control the polymer to keep the Dry Solids in the cake and the Suspended
Solids in the centrate to within user selectable ranges. These ranges are set up on commissioning and are likely to give
a good compromise on polymer usage, cake solids and loading on the works. There are occasions, however, when
reduced polymer isn’t the most important outcome. It may be that there is pressure on the works and reduced loading
going back to the head of the works is more important, or perhaps the cake is being transported off-site so the driest
possible cake solids is the most important outcome.
Each PolySense is equipped with five sets of control settings that can be set up on commissioning to allow the operator
to easily select the appropriate control setup for the plant requirements at the time. e.g.
• Normal operation
• Driest cake
• Cleanest centrate
• Most consistent cake solids
• Least polymer usage

Dr Craig Stracey, UK
24. Legionella Risk Management
Cooling systems and heating systems in e.g. hospitals, airports, government buildings, hotels and very large office blocks
can be a source of the Legionella bacterium. The bacteria often grow in biofilms that adhere to the walls of a pipe or other
vessel. The BioSense allows you to monitor for the development of this buildup and dose the appropriate chemical to
reduce and disperse the biofilm prior to building up a dangerous level of Legionella.
Automatic Biocide Control
Measuring the residual biocide in a body of water only tells half the story. It tells you that there is little or no biological
activity in the bulk water. This doesn't necessarily mean that biofilm isn't building up on the walls of pipes and vessels with
the possibility of the development of harmful bacterial colonies. The BioSense allows you to monitor the build up of that
biofilm and in turn take the appropriate action AUTOMATICALLY to return the system to a clean condtion. This could be as
simple as triggering an alarm for a manual intervention or as complex as increasing biocide levels or shock dosing, all
controlled by the BioSense. The BioSense gives you:
• Control of system surface biological activity
• Treatment effectiveness monitoring
• Biocide program optimisation
• Indication of a "clean" state
Biofilm - The solution
The BioSense sensor was developed to provide on-line and real-time indication of biofilm activity on typical metallic
surfaces. The probe is designed and operated so that microorganisms in the environment will settle on probe surfaces
before they settle on vessel walls or piping. This gives an early warning of potentially dangerous biological activity in the
process. By closely tracking biofilm activity on the probe, the BioSense can take remedial action such as increasing the
dosing of a biocide or dispersant. The BioSense biofilm controller can also be used to assess the effectiveness of a
treatment, or to schedule maintenance activities. By monitoring biofilm activity on surfaces very precisely, costly over-
treatment can be avoided and chemical treatments can be optimised, therefore BioSense can:
• Reduce the risk of Legionella growth
• Reduce the cost of chemical treatment
• Reduce maintenance
• Increase the efficiency of process equipment
Principle of Operation
The controller applies a potential between the
probe electrodes that causes microorganisms
to settle on the surface of the probe before
they would settle on the surfaces of a pipe or
a vessel. The biological activity of the biofilm
creates a signal.
A BioSense controller collects and monitors
that signal continually. An increasing trend in
the signal indicates the onset of biofilm activity
on the probe. The controller can then take
remedial action automatically by, for example,
increasing or decreasing the biocide levels.
The CRONOS BioSense is a simple controller
capable of automatically changing, dosing
regimes etc. With the more sophisticated
CRIUS® and CRATOS controllers providing,
data logging, remote access and control via
GSM.

Graphite
Our light industrial conductivity sensor utilises Graphite
technology. The durable epoxy body construction provides a
rugged and dependable sensor for potable water and clean
water. Mount them in-line, in a pipe "T" fitting, or submerse
them into a tank. For many applications, the epoxy body
conductivity sensors are the lowest cost, most reliable
conductivity sensor to use, especially for process
applications. Rugged epoxy bodies make the sensors
virtually unbreakable. These are an excellent choice to use
as standard online conductivity electrodes in the water and
related industries.

Autocalibrator - for free and total chlorine
The HaloSense Residual Chlorine Analyzer is the first of its kind in the world to offer automatic calibration as an option.
Cleverly engineered and using state of the art electronics the HaloSense Autocalibrator for free and total residual chlorine is
able to save customers considerable sums of money by autocalibrating at user-defined timed intervals, without the presence
of an operator.
• No maintenance for up to 6 months
• No calibration for up to 6 months
• Low cost of ownership
• Optional email/SMS text alarms
• Optional remote control via GSM/GPRS modem
"The HaloSense Autocalibrator is reliable, dependable and
saves a fortune on travelling to remote sites. I am very happy
with the ones I've installed." Wayne Burton, UK
Principle of Operation
The HaloSense membraned potentiostatic chrono
amperometric chlorine sensor, is housed within the
Autocalibrator. Its unique design means that pH effects are
small and pH correction or compensation is not usually
required.
The Autocalibrator enables the HaloSense Chlorine
Analyzer to be operated completely unattended for up to 6
months. At user defined intervals the Autocalibrator takes a
sample, removes the chlorine from it by passing it through
an activated carbon filter, and then adds the appropriate
amount of a chlorine solution to a fixed volume of chlorine
free water. This solution of a known chlorine concentration is
then passed over the sensor which is allowed to equilibrate
and then the sensor is calibrated by the electronics.
In addition to the state of the art sensors the HaloSense
range of controllers offers an impressive range of
communication protocols including Modbus, Profibus,
TCP/IP (with webserver), RS485, Relays and 4-20mA
outputs. Added to the cost savings of a truly automatic (no
operator present), calibration system, some will achieve a
replacement payback of only a few months.
Autocalibration
Whenever a chlorine analyser is calibrated by an operator
or technician there is a cost involved and risk of human
error. With the HaloSense Autocalibrator the costs of getting
to and from a remote site, or the risk of an operator
calibrating an analyser incorrectly are eliminated.
• Calibration at unsocial hours
• When reproducibility is paramount
• Remote sites
• Skilled personnel not required
Water Treatment
• Remote sites
• Automatic calibration
• Chlorine dosing control
• Secondary chlorination
28. What Safeguards are Built-in?
In the event of a problem with the calibration, the system will
attempt a second calibration. If that too fails then a system
fail alarm is given out and the analyser will not accept the
new calibration. A system fail alarm will result from any of
the following;
• A change in calibration of more than 10% from
the previous calibration.
• An unstable signal from the probe (the rate of
change of the signal is monitored thus ensuring
that any fault in the calibration process does not
produce large errors in the Chlorine Residual
reading).
• A sensor that doesn’t get within 5% of zero
indicates a failed filter or a failing sensor.
• A low sample flow or low sample pressure will
trigger an alarm.
An optional, integral GSM/GPRS modem allows the
operator to be advised of an alarm immediately, and the in-
built PID control provides flexible chlorine dosing control
options.

29. Autoflush - keeping sensors cleaner for longer
Key Benefits
• Frequent flushing prevents build-up of
solids
• Reduced maintenance
• Prolonged sensor life
• Suitable for pH/ORP/Cl2/O3/ClO2
• User selectable flush duration
• User selectable flush frequency
• ‘Flush now’ facility
• Simple, infrequent maintenance
Principle of Operation
The idea is simple and effective….every x minutes, (the
user can adjust x) the sample drains away and the sensor
and sensor housing is flushed with clean water. This water
flushes the whole of the inside of the sensor housing taking
away any build-up of solids to drain. The repeated flushing
of the housing and sensor helps prevent the build-up of
solids and so prolongs the life of the sensor and reduces
the maintenance. For waxy or fatty build-ups warm water
can be used to flush the sensors. As standard heavy duty
pinch valves ensure reduced maintenance over a long life.
Applications
• pH on paper mills
• ORP in scrubbers
• Chlorine in food disinfection
• pH in slurries
• Ozone in food washing
• Pre-chlorination
• Chlorine in paper mill stock
• Chlorine in waste water
"The Autoflush from Pi has
meant that we can now
measure chlorine applications in
dirty water applications reliably
which previously we couldn't",
Eddy Scott, UK
