3rd Project Meeting – 25.-28. June 2010 – Milos Island Greece
The third project meeting was held on the Greek Island Milos/Cyclades in Greece
and was organized by the Partner Institution Milos Educational Women’s
Collaboration for Activities in Tourism, an organisation carrying out EU funded
projects since it’s outset in 1991.
The meeting facilities were housed in the George Eliopoulos Conference Center, a
former Kaolin Processing Plant, nowadays catering International Meetings and
Conferences.
The 17 participants from the countries Lithuania, Turkey, Romania and Greece held
a successful meeting, despite the fact, that Strikes in Greece were an obstacle to
travelling in this mobility, and the partners from Lithuania arrived with a 12 hours
delay after travelling more than 30 hours at 10.00 in the morning at the Milos
harbour, from where they were directly transferred to the Meeting Facilities-without
sleep-!
Others were subject to a bomb threatening on their ferryboat causing a some hour
delay.
2. But finally the partners gathered at the George Eliopoulos Conference Center and
presented their choices of 3 to 5 Cultural Heritages, which each organisation had
chosen for each participating country to be included in the booklet.
Strategies were developed for encouraging civil involvement in cultural events and
education suitable for each region’s structure.
Finally the Cultural Program could be commenced with sightseeing tours,
introduction of Milos history going back to ancient and prehistoric times and the
interesting geological and mining history of this volcanic island.
The lovely Milos landscape and architecture, stunning views and the rich cultural
program could compensate for the trouble whilst travelling.
The group visited the four cultural heritage sites, which Mewcat had chosen as
valuable sites for the educational program
- three of them are of great historic value and known all over the world,
the famous Venus of Milos, the Christian Catacombs and the Ancient Theatre.
The fourth cultural heritage site was Sarakiniko, a lunar landscape created from
white Lava ash, shaped by wind and sea, which served as hiding place for pirate
ships in the middle age.
A stroll in the evening in the picturesque villages on top of the hill, Plaka and Tripiti,
with fantastic views over the Aegean sea led to a visit of traditional small tavernas ,
wher the guests could taste many local traditional dishes and listen to traditional
music.
Stella’s Bakalavas sweets received big applause, even from the Guests from Turkey
and Leonidas, the Tour Guide was popular for leaving the group “free” on top of the
famous Papafranga Cave near the ancient town Fylakopi to look for some pieces of
original obsidian, the famous rock, serving for the production of ancient tools.
