The story is that the song was only to be used in the
background during a few scenes. While shooting in Mcleod
Ganj, the song was heard by some locals who approached the
director and asked him to turn it into a live song as it spoke
directly to them regarding their cause, the clues of which
could later be seen in the video song in the form of flags and
banners.
Without any surprise, it ran into problems with the Censor
Board which asked the director to remove the controversial
elements.
Director insisted that the song talked about personal freedom
and has nothing to do with geographical issues but to no avail.
As a result, the blurred flags and slogans can still be seen in
the video of which song?

organizations jumped the bandwagon.
• Surprisingly, Bal Thackeray defended the director by
calling it a "patriotic" film in his paper Saamana and
asserted that there was nothing wrong with this
particulr song.
• However, the controversy it raised cost the director a
National Award where he lost to Yash Chopra’s Darr by
just 1 vote.
