How Technology has changed the Architecture?
(Mobile Apps Only)
By – Aditya Saharia
AIM – To Study how Technology is changing the
Architecture. (Mobile Apps Only)
Since 2010, smartphones has become one of the most useful and essential tools
people use to organize their activities. Companies have developed a lot of apps to
help people to do activities of many disciplines, and architecture could not be
ignored. With the boom in the application designing industry and the competition
amongst them, the quality has improved over the past couple of years. Some of
the innovative apps are :-
• Paper (iOS)
Having won Apple’s App of the
Year and been given the 2012
Apple Design Award, the
Paper app by FiftyThree, Inc.
makes it easy to capture your
ideas as sketches, diagrams,
illustrations or notes and share
them on the internet. It’s a
simple and intuitive app built
specifically for the iPad’s
display. The company recently
announced the introduction of
a ‘pencil’ stylus that connects
to the iPad’s via Bluetooth.
Price: Free (iOS)
• Magic Plan
This is a very interesting and useful app. It
uses the devices cameras to draw the floor
plans of real spaces. You just have to stand in
a certain place and point your device, and the
app will draw the floor plan. When it is done,
you can export the floor plan as a PDF, DXF
or a JPG.
Price: Free (IOS, Android)
• Morpholio Trace (iOS)
The more you draw the better it is. I
personally love working in layers! The
more layers you have the more refined
the design turns out to be. This
application is perfect for this; you keep
sketching over your sketches. Adding
layers over layers just like one places
tracing paper. It’s truly the perfect
application for an architect.
Price: Free (iOS)
• AutoCad 360
Developed by Autodesk,
AutoCAD 360 is an
extremely fundamental app
that needs to be installed on
your phone or tablet so that
you have access to all the
drawings when you are on
the go. AutoCAD 360
enables you to view, create
or edit any drawings. It will
help you to access
drawings anytime and
anywhere you need to, and
you can also share them
using your web browser.
Price: Free (IOS, Android)
Walking clients through a project can be
tedious, particularly if the work is still
ongoing. Architects have long relied on
paper, physical models, field visits, and,
more recently, digital tools to convey
progress on a project. Earlier this year,
Autodesk announced plans to make 3D
models created in a selection of its
software programs compatible with
Microsoft's HoloLens augmented reality
(AR) technology. The company is not
alone. Software developers in the AEC
space are evolving digital modeling with
the development of AR and virtual reality
(VR) platforms that allow project teams
to use mobile phones, tablets, and
headsets to immerse themselves and
their clients in their forthcoming
buildings.
Latest Technology: Augmented Reality
What is Augmented Reality?
Augmented Reality is a type of virtual reality that aims to duplicate the world's
environment in a computer. An augmented reality system generates a composite view
for the user that is the combination of the real scene viewed by the user and a virtual
scene generated by the computer that augments the scene with additional information.
The virtual scene generated by the computer is designed to enhance the user's
sensory perception of the virtual world they are seeing or interacting with. The goal of
Augmented Reality is to create a system in which the user cannot tell the difference
between the real world and the virtual augmentation of it. Today Augmented Reality is
used in entertainment, military training, engineering design, robotics, manufacturing
and other industries.
How is it any different seeing a rendered project in AR
to a quality render on a PC/Laptop screen?
There's a number of reasons for this that
I've noticed personally with the first being
depth perception & space. With a good
HMD (Head Mounted Display) you can
actually get a real sense of scale. Whether
it be the impressive size of an entire
building or the distance between two
benches this is not always easy for the
average person to perceive from an image
on a PC/Laptop screen. This brings me to
the second and most important point which
is "feeling." With presence comes feeling
whereby a person not only sees what's
been created. They can actually "feel"
what it's like to be in that space visually.
I'm told this can be the hardest part of a
project for an architect or designer to
convey to a client making it a very
compelling technology.
How does Augmented Reality Works? (VIDEO)
Since last 4-5 years, smartphones have made a major impact on users all
around the globe on almost everything, so how can architecture be ignored.
With the advancement in technology, architecture world has been benefited a
lot. There are lot more apps that helps architects in everything from
photography to designing to taking notes to even making measured plans. It
has also made the client or users smart which ultimately helps architect to
understand them better.
Also the latest Augmented Reality Technology of smartphones, has changed the
entire perspective of how people see architecture. I think a lot will be changed in
the upcoming 3-4 years which will be really exciting to see.
