1. Answer the following question with complete sentences:
➢ What is a prime number?
Answer
Any number divisible by itself and 1 only is called a prime number
Exception to this case is 1 which is not a prime number
➢ What does it mean to factor an expression?
Answer
Factoring an expression means taking out zeroes from an expression
For example
X2 +5x+6
It can be factored as
(x+3)(x+2)
➢ What is the ac method of factoring? Give an example.

➢ What is the ac method of factoring? Give an example.
Answer
Consider a polynomial expression of the form ax2 + bx + c.
The polynomial can be factored if there are two factors of ac whose sum is b.
Consider the expression
3×2 + 6x – 4x – 8
We can factor this by grouping two at a time:
(3×2 + 6x) – (4x + 8)
We now pull out the GCF of each:
3x (x + 2) – 4 (x + 2)
Pull out the GCF again:
(3x – 4) (x + 2)
➢ How can you determine if you have factored correctly?
After u factor out take put each factor separately equal to zero and find the
corresponding value. Put that value in the original equation it must satisfy the
original equation.
Or other way around could be multiply the factors again to get back the original
equation; if we get the original equation then it is correctly factored.
➢ How can you determine if (a-b) is a factor of the expression (a3-b3)?
