2. Serving European scientists across food systems

3.  To explore how European scientists may use,
adapt and evolve existing open e-
infrastructure resources and services that will
be part of the European Open Science Cloud
(EOSC)
 To demonstrate and pilot how the
development of innovative data- and
computing-intensive applications can take
place, in order to accelerate scientific
discoveries in agriculture and food
Challenges

4.  Europe's final transition must be one from fragmented data sets to an
integrated European Open Science Cloud. By 2020, we want all European
researchers to be able to deposit, access and analyse European scientific
data through a European Open Science Cloud. [Speech by Commissioner

 It will federate existing and emerging horizontal and thematic data
infrastructures, effectively bridging today’s fragmentation and ad-hoc
solutions
 It will provide 1.7M EU researchers an environment with free, open
services for data storage, management, analysis and re-use across
disciplines
 It will add value (scale, data-driven science, inter-disciplinarity, data to
knowledge to innovation) and leverage current and past infrastructure
investment

The EOSC Vision

5.  Aims to exploit core e-infrastructures such as EGI.eu,
OpenAIRE, EUDAT and D4Science and customize/extend them
towards providing a sustainable channel for addressing
adjacent but not fully connected user communities around
Agriculture and Food
 Focuses on three main communities:
 Related to global agricultural modelling, inter-comparison, and improvement of
the research community that studies short and long-term food production
under environmental and climate change conditions.
 Related to addressing specific problems on food security, namely the need to
efficiently analyze data produced by plant phenotyping and its correlation with
crop yield, resource usage and local climates.
 Related to the design of new high-performance food safety data processing
workflows

7.  Builds a shared vision of a future sustainable e-infrastructure
for research and education in agriculture and make it operable
through pragmatic recommendations that will be reflected in a
common roadmap
 Through a process of co-design, involving mainly research and
education communities but also practitioners and EU policy
makers, and will build on the existing projects, networks,
international alliances or initiatives. Three (3) workshops:
 Community Building and Fine-Mapping Workshop (6-7 July 2017),

 Challenges & Solutions Envisioning Workshop (27-28 November 2017),

 Foresight Roadmap Workshop (May 2018), Chania, Greece

8.  Build on top of the AGINFRA+ infrastructure
 Implement the eROSA roadmap
 Run pilots in larger scale based on the
selected use cases across the Food System
 Show case the operational mode of EOSC

& data services)
 Would focus on the H2020 DT-SFS-26-2019:

11.  Collecting and promoting appropriate and mature
use cases through the AGINFRA+ and eROSA
channels
 Organising hands-on workshops (2017-2018) jointly
with AGINFRA+ where use case stakeholders can
test various EINFRA services & resources
 Develop a pipeline of mature use cases that
demonstrate the potential of large scale piloting in a
Food Cloud demonstrator
